Statistics To Know About Cosmetic Breast Surgery Today

doctor-patient-consultationEvery now and again, I am interested in checking out plastic surgery statistics from top organizations in the field. This helps me gain a better understanding of what’s happening outside my practice, as far as what patients are currently most interested in achieving with plastic surgery. I always find this material interesting, and patients often do too whenever we discuss them in the office. This is why I wanted to present a few of the most interesting findings pertaining to cosmetic breast surgery from the most recent statistics published by the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS).

General Breast Surgery Statistics:

  • In a general sense, cosmetic breast surgery is more popular than ever, and has clearly rebounded after a lull related to COVID-19. Last year, people underwent over 3.5 million breast surgery procedures, including more than 728,000 in the US. This marks an 8.5% increase globally since 2017.

Breast Augmentation:

  • Always near the top of the list, breast augmentation surgery was the most commonly performed cosmetic surgery procedure. It was also just behind liposuction as the most popular of all. Approximately 1,658,673 breast augmentation procedures were performed last year (378,700 in the US).

Breast Lift:

  • Breast lift surgery also remains incredibly in-demand, accounting for over 781,000 procedures around the world last year (167,395 in the US). Its 34% increase from the previous year was one of the highest leaps of any cosmetic procedure.

Common Myths about LiposuctionTime can affect the body in many ways. For women, especially those who have experienced pregnancy and childbirth in the past, it’s incredibly common to experience patches of stretched, excess skin in areas all over the body. Debunking Five Common Breast Surgery Myths

When it comes to breast surgery, there are a number of procedures that are available to alter the breast shape, size and appearance. If you are interested in a breast augmentation, lift or reduction, chances are you have come across your fair share of myths and rumors regarding these surgical procedures. To help you decipher fact from fiction, I have debunked five common myths I typically hear about breast surgery.

#1: Losing weight eliminates the need for breast reduction.

There is a common misperception that losing excess weight can help to naturally reduce breast size. Unfortunately, weight loss does not necessarily guarantee that your breast size will shrink. The breasts are made up of both glandular tissue and fat and it is impossible to lose excess glandular tissue through weight loss and exercise.

#2: Breast implants need to be replaced after 10 years.

While breast implants are not expected to last forever, they also have no standard expiration date. Replacing your breast implants is only necessary if there are issues, such as a leakage or a rupture, or if you decide you’d prefer a different size or type of implant. In order to minimize possible complications, it is important to attend regular follow-up appointments following your surgery.

#3: You cannot breastfeed after breast surgery.

If you are planning on having children, you may be worried that undergoing breast surgery could affect your ability to safely breastfeed. Fortunately, there are little to no risks associated with breast surgery that would impact future pregnancy or breastfeeding. Rarely, milk production and nipple sensitivity can be affected depending on what type of breast surgery you undergo. Additionally, there are no medical risks for babies who are breastfed by women with breast implants. As always, I will guide you through what to expect post-procedure during your consultation.

#4: You can have surgery to perfectly fit a certain cup size.

When undergoing breast augmentation surgery, you will have an idea of what size your breasts will be, but it is extremely difficult to know what your exact cup size will be. Because implant sizing is measured in cubic centimeters, or ccs, not cup sizes, this makes predicting your final cup size a challenge. Additionally, when I perform this procedure, one of my main goals is for the end results to look natural and align with the dimensions of your body. During your consultation, we’ll discuss your sizing options and find the perfect fit for your vision.

#5: Any surgeon can perform breast surgery.

When choosing a surgeon to perform your breast surgery, there are a number of important factors to watch out for. An important distinction is to make sure that your surgeon is a board-certified plastic surgeon. While any surgeon can offer breast surgery, only board-certified plastic surgeons have years of specialized training and experience and are certified by the American Society of Plastic Surgery. Another important factor is their prior breast surgery experience. For example, a talented physician who specializes in liposuction, but has little breast surgery experience might not be the best choice. Fortunately, I have over 30 years of experience performing breast augmentation, lift and reduction surgeries.

What a Breast Lift Can & Cannot Do

It’s very important for prospective plastic surgery patients to maintain realistic, attainable expectations in regards to their respective cosmetic procedure. It’s understandable for every patient to want incredible, life-changing results from their plastic surgery. But one of the keys to long-term happiness and satisfaction from a cosmetic procedure is thoroughly understanding what a specific procedure can and cannot do. With this in mind, I wanted to discuss breast lift surgery to help patients better understand what this popular cosmetic breast procedure is capable of providing.

shapely-womanA breast lift can help women who experience significant breast sagging. Breast sagging can occur as a result of pregnancy and breastfeeding, considerable weight loss, a natural genetic predisposition, or simply a loosening of skin in the breast area over time. During the procedure, I am able to surgically remove loose, excess skin while tightening the remaining skin and breast tissue. The result is perkier, younger-looking breasts.

A breast lift cannot help women reduce the size of their breasts. As opposed to other cosmetic breast procedures, a breast lift is designed to address the positioning of the breasts, not their size. Although the skin removed during a breast lift may result in a modest reduction in breast volume, this is not a result that patients should expect or count on.

A breast lift can be combined with other cosmetic breast procedures. It’s quite common for women to undergo either breast augmentation or breast reduction surgery in conjunction with their breast lift. Doing so can help my patients achieve the comprehensive breast contouring results that they desire while cutting down on the potential surgical costs and recovery time of undergoing these procedures separately.

A breast lift cannot be replaced by performing chest exercises. Although this is a common subject that I am asked about during breast lift consultations, there is unfortunately nothing that working out can do to address breast sagging. While performing chest exercises can help build muscles and reduce fat in the chest, they cannot treat the stretched skin that causes breast sagging to occur.

It’s important to fully understand what a procedure like a breast lift is capable of in order to make the most informed, beneficial plastic surgery decision possible. How to Find the Right Plastic Surgeon For Your Needs

In my many years of performing plastic surgery, I have seen firsthand that every patient is different. What might have been the best approach for my previous patient may not be an option for the next. That’s why it is imperative for every prospective plastic surgery patient to find the right plastic surgeon for their needs. However, in some cases, this is easier said than done. With so many available options, it can be challenging or intimidating to sift through all the possible candidates. That’s why I am happy to spend some time discussing how people can successfully find the right surgeon for them.

Only Consider Board-Certified Plastic Surgeons

Certification from the American Board of Plastic Surgery, as well as similar organizations like the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery confirms a baseline level of professionalism, quality, and discretion for any prospective patient to consider. One red flag to keep in mind is working with any doctor who describes themselves as a board-certified “cosmetic surgeon” and not a board-certified “plastic surgeon”. The difference may seem trivial, but the term “cosmetic surgeon” is not recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties. Legally, any licensed physician can describe themselves as a “cosmetic surgeon” and perform surgical procedures that they might not be properly trained or skilled enough to perform safely.

Focus On Experience Addressing Your Specific Need

Many plastic surgeons have considerable experience performing a wide range of cosmetic and/or reconstructive procedures, but it’s important to work with a surgeon with a proven track record of assisting patients with similar needs to your own. For instance, a surgeon with a great track record of performing breast augmentation, but little experience with facial procedures probably isn’t the best choice for your facelift. I recommend asking to see before-and-after photos from previous patients who have undergone your respective procedure to get a better idea of whether or not they are the right surgeon for your needs.

Make Sure You Are a Good Personality Match

Before making any final decisions, you must confirm that you and your prospective plastic surgeon have a good rapport as well as a similar aesthetic sensibility. It’s important for a patient to feel like they are working with a plastic surgeon who makes them feel comfortable throughout every step of their plastic surgery process. That includes a willingness and ability to address all your questions and concerns during the pre-surgery consultation as well as clear communication about what your post-surgery recovery will entail.

When it comes to selecting a plastic surgeon, there is no need to rush. Put in the necessary time and effort to research all of your available options. In the long run, you will not regret it.
