Dr. John LeRoy Debunks Myths About Eyelid Surgery

Thanks to modern technology and communication, there is more easily accessible information about eyelid surgery available to patients than ever before. And while this can be a great resource for people trying to research the procedure, there is also a surplus of wrong or misleading information to sift through. That’s why, as a double board-certified plastic surgeon, I thought I could help by talking through some common myths about eyelid surgery.

Myth #1: Eyelid Surgery Is Only For The Wealthy

This is absolutely false. Plastic surgery has never been more accessible and inclusive in terms of cost and eyelid surgery is not something that patients should expect to break the bank. I perform this procedure in-office to help allay hospital and anesthesia fees commonly associated with plastic surgery. I also offer plastic surgery financing for patients who would prefer to break up their eyelid surgery costs into smaller, interest-free payments (for those who qualify).

Myth #2: Eyelid Surgery Results Can Be Achieved Without Surgery

We’ve seen incredible advancements in non-surgical cosmetic treatments in recent years, but nothing that can replicate the results of eyelid surgery. However, patients who are looking for a less invasive version of the procedure may be good candidates for my signature Band Aid Eyelid Surgery. In the world of plastic surgery, there’s no such thing as “forever.” Changes that a person’s face experiences over time, including those due to natural aging, can lead to additional signs of facial aging after eyelid surgery. However, eyelid surgery results are intended to be very long-lasting and the fear of natural aging over time should not be a deterrent for anyone who considers themself a good candidate for the procedure.

Will I Experience Scarring After Eyelid Surgery?

Prospective patients are always a bit worried about the idea of scarring after plastic surgery. And this concern is only amplified in cases of facial procedures like eyelid surgery. While I certainly understand this trepidation, I have been reassuring my patients for many years that when the procedure is performed by an experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon like myself, visual scarring after eyelid surgery should not be a major worry. Allow me to explain why this is.

Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, works by surgically removing stretched, excess skin and small deposits of fat from the upper and/or lower eyelids. Doing so will effectively reverse common signs of facial aging like droopy eyelids and bags and provide a more rested, youthful appearance. And while a scar is unavoidable during any surgery where an incision is made, I am able to conceal scars in the natural crease of the eyelid or lash line to help prevent them from being seen. Additionally, even these nearly undetectable scars will continue to fade and eventually vanish over time with the right post-surgical care.

I also perform my signature Band Aid blepharoplasty, a less invasive variation on eyelid surgery, that may be appealing to patients even more sensitive about potential scarring and recovery. This procedure is performed in-office using a gentle numbing agent.

Understanding All Of Your Brow Lift Options

brow lift LeRoyThe eyes are one of the important areas to consider for anyone who wishes to address their appearance and look younger. Over time, it’s only natural for loose, sagging skin to accumulate in the area directly above the eyes and forehead muscles to gradually weaken. This wrinkled skin can dramatically affect a person’s facial appearance and make them look old before their time. Thankfully, brow lift surgery can help. Today I wanted to discuss the different brow lift procedure options that I provide and how they can each help my patients achieve their unique aesthetic goals.

Band Aid Brow Lift

My signature band aid brow lift offers patients a more subtle and less invasive alternative for the procedure when compared to traditional brow lift surgery. The band aid brow lift can effectively address visible wrinkles and creases in the forehead area to help provide a more vital and less tired-looking appearance. Similar to my other “Band Aid” procedures, the band aid brow lift can be performed in our office with gentle numbing while the patient is awake. Additionally, the band aid brow lift comes with a shorter recovery time and lower surgical costs than the traditional version of the procedure.

Combined with Eyelid Surgery

One approach to brow lift surgery that I recommend for some of my patients when appropriate is combining the procedure with eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty). Combining a brow lift and eyelid surgery into one procedure can help provide comprehensive rejuvenation to the upper portion of a patient’s face (above and around the eyes). Depending on each patient’s needs and preferences, we can combine a band aid brow lift with either traditional eyelid surgery or the band aid version of the procedure.

Signs It’s Time for a Facelift SurgeryPlastic surgery can help patients of any age to rediscover their self-confidence and finally overcome an aesthetic feature that has been making them feel self-conscious for years. As a double board-certified plastic surgeon who has been in practice for over 25 years, I have seen that refreshed pride in countless patients of all age groups, but one of the groups I see regularly is patients in their 50s.

What are the best cosmetic surgeries to get in your 50s? This will vary from person to person because everyone ages at a different pace. However, there are certain surgeries that are particularly popular for patients of this age.

Eyelid Surgery or Band Aid Eyelid Surgery

As you age, the area around your eyes can change in several ways. Many men and women develop “puffy” lower eyelids or “bags under the eyes.” Others experience sagging skin above their upper eyelids that gives their eyes a hooded appearance. In fact, many of my patients have both of these signs of aging.

Eyelid surgery (also called blepharoplasty) or my minimally invasive Band Aid Eyelid Surgery can address either or both of these issues. Lower eyelid surgery removes the protruding pads of fat and/or sagging skin that are contributing to the unwanted aging under the eyes. Upper eyelid surgery reduces the excess sagging skin above the eyes to relieve hooded eyelids and give the eyes a more rested look.

Liposuction or Band Aid Liposuction

Unwanted fat is a common frustration at any age, but it tends to amplify for people in their 50s. Women in particular usually see a drop in their metabolism around menopause, so stubborn pockets of fat only become more stubborn.

For this reason, liposuction is particularly popular for patients in their 50s, including liposuction for the abdomen, upper arms, thighs, hips, and other areas. Liposuction or Band Aid Liposuction for the jowls or “double chin” area is also highly popular for patients in their 50s because facial fat often repositions to this area as part of the aging process.

Mini Facelift including the Band Aid Mini Facelift

While a traditional facelift is popular for patients in their 60s and 70s, many of my patients in their 50s are starting to see the early signs of sagging skin and shifting facial tissue. They have surpassed the fine lines and mild wrinkles that they can treat with non-surgical treatments like facial filler injections, but they don’t yet have enough sagging skin to warrant a traditional facelift. These patients are ideal candidates for my Band Aid Mini Facelift.

It’s no surprise, then, that many of the most popular plastic surgery procedures focus on “lifting” and restoring a younger, rejuvenated look. You’ve heard of a facelift, neck lift, brow lift, breast lift, and possibly even a body lift. There’s another procedure, though, that is more popular than you might realize: an eye lift.

As a double board-certified plastic surgeon who has specialized in facial rejuvenation for over 25 years, I am proud to provide an inside look at eye lifts including what they are, why they’re performed, and how you can make yours minimally invasive.

What Is an Eye Lift?

An eye lift, simply put, is a plastic surgery that revitalizes the area around the eyes. It may involve removing excess sagging skin and swollen fat and repositioning other tissue, but the ultimate goal is to make your eyes look younger and brighter and to align with your desired results.

Eye lifts go by several different names. You may hear this surgery referred to as cosmetic eyelid surgery, blepharoplasty, eyelid lift, or possibly an “eye job.” By any name, though, there are two types of eye lifts. Upper eyelid surgery focuses on the area above your eyes, namely the space between your eyebrow and your upper eyelid. Lower eyelid surgery focuses on the area below the eyes. Some people want to reduce aging both above and below their eyes, so it’s common to perform upper and lower eyelid surgery in the same procedure.

What Cosmetic Issues Does an Eye Lift Address?

Everyone experiences facial aging in different ways and at different paces, but there are certain common aesthetic frustrations that upper and lower eyelid surgeries aim to address. An upper eye lift is meant to reduce sagging skin above the upper eyelids. That sagging skin (and sometimes fat), whether genetic or age-related, gives you “hooded eyelids” or puffy eyelids and makes your eyes appear more tired.

A lower eye lift, on the other hand, is meant to address “bags under the eyes.” Under-eye bags can be caused by protruding pads of fat under your eyes, sagging skin below your eyes, or both, so a lower eyelid surgery will address one or both of these issues to give you a revitalized and well-rested look.

How Common Are Eye Lifts?

You may not hear about eye lifts as often as facelifts, but they’re actually highly common. In fact, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, eyelid surgery was the second most popular cosmetic surgery in 2020, with over 325,000 of these procedures performed in the US that year.

How Long Does an Eye Lift Last?

No surgery or treatment can stop your skin from aging in the future, so for any age-correcting procedure, your results will seem to fade as you develop new aging over the coming years. That is why many of these procedures like facelifts are typically repeated after about ten years to treat these new signs of aging. The good news with an eye lift, however, is that my patients rarely experience enough new aging in this area after surgery to warrant a new surgery, so most eye lift patients only have the procedure once.

Keep in mind, though, that you will still want to take steps to maintain your results for as long as possible. This includes healthy skin care, daily sun protection, and potentially non-surgical skin treatments like laser treatments to reduce mild aging.
