Debunking Five Common Myths About Rhinoplasty Surgery
Rhinoplasty surgery, commonly referred to as a nose job, is a procedure that has both cosmetic and medical benefits. Because everyone’s nose is unique, the surgery is tailored to the specific needs of each patient. By accounting for individual facial characteristics, I, Dr. John L. LeRoy, am able to create natural-looking rhinoplasty results to positively transform a patient’s appearance. Unfortunately, there are still myths and misconceptions about nose surgery floating around. To help you decipher fact from fiction, I have dispelled five common myths I often hear about this procedure.
#1: Rhinoplasty surgery is painful.
When I perform rhinoplasty surgery, I put my patients under local or general anesthesia prior to the procedure. The type of anesthesia is based on the level of correction as well as patient preference. Because of this, it’s typical to not feel any pain or discomfort during the surgery. After the procedure, you will typically experience swelling and slight soreness, but these symptoms will subside within a few days.
#2: Only women undergo rhinoplasty surgery.
While the majority of cosmetic procedures are undergone by women, thousands of men elect to receive cosmetic surgeries every year. It is not uncommon for men to have cosmetic concerns about their appearance and seek treatment. Additionally, many men are interested in rhinoplasty because of the medical benefits it carries when it comes to correcting a deviated septum or improving breathing.
#3: You have to get your nose “touched-up” every few years.
While a small number of patients may want revision surgery years after their procedure, a nose job is designed to be a one-time surgery. The results from your initial procedure should not change over the years. However, since the aging process can be unpredictable, some patients may require minimal maintenance.
#4: You must be a certain age to undergo nose surgery.
Compared to other cosmetic procedures, rhinoplasty surgery is unique because it can be performed on a wide range of ages. Patients who can undergo nose surgery range from teenagers to those past their middle age years. There is no right age for this procedure, but it’s important that the facial features of younger patients are fully developed before surgery.
#5: Rhinoplasty surgery causes breathing problems.
When it comes to this myth, the exact opposite is true. When performed to help treat medical concerns, rhinoplasty surgery can actually make it easier to breathe because your plastic surgeon will open up and reconstruct the nasal passages. During the recovery period, some patients may experience minor nasal blockage, but this will quickly heal. Ultimately, after your board-certified plastic surgeon performs your surgery, you should expect your breathing to improve or to remain the same depending on your desired outcome.
Now that a few myths have been busted, hopefully you have a better understanding about rhinoplasty surgery and how it can help improve the appearance and function of your nose. How Was the Band Aid Mini Facelift Developed?
With over 6,000+ successful procedures performed, my signature Band Aid Mini Facelift has been positively transforming the lives of my patients since 1997.
I, Dr. John LeRoy, first came up with the idea for the procedure while I was completing my fellowship with the Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital in New York City. While being mentored by the world’s leading plastic surgeons, I began to focus and hone in on cosmetic surgery. After watching and learning from the variety of talented surgeons, I came up with the idea to incorporate the best parts of their surgeries into one simple procedure.
While I continued to develop and think about the idea, I didn’t put it into practice until a patient asked me if I could do a procedure for them in-office with gentle numbing. That moment was when preparation met opportunity. Both the patient and I were incredibly happy with the outcome of the procedure. I wasn’t surprised by the results, but I was surprised that someone had asked me to do this particular procedure that I had been thinking about for so long.
Check out the video to learn more about how I developed my line of signature Band Aid procedures.
Flash forward to today and my Band Aid Mini Facelift procedure is still immensely popular with my patients. Because the procedure can be done in-office with gentle numbing and carries a reasonably quick recovery time, its adoration comes as no surprise. How to Maximize Your Breast Lift Surgery Results
For those dealing with sagging, drooping breasts, breast lift surgery can make a significant difference in the appearance of the chest. This procedure removes excess skin and repositions the muscle and breast tissue to give the breasts a firmer, more youthful look. Because the results are so profound, it makes sense that most of my patients want to know how to maximize their post-procedure results.
There are a number of factors that determine how long breast lift results will last. Age, genetics, dietary habits and overall health can play a role in the length of your results. Depending on these factors and on personal preference, patients may experience long-lasting results or might want small revisions after a few years. Thankfully, I, Dr. John L. LeRoy, have a few suggestions to help you prolong the results of your breast lift surgery.
Avoid Weight Fluctuations
Extreme weight loss or gain can have negative effects on many cosmetic surgical procedures and breast lifts are no exception. Weight fluctuations cause the skin to stretch which can alter the appearance and overall results of your surgery. Because of this, you should plan on undergoing a breast lift once you have achieved and maintained your goal weight. Since the breast tissue experiences multiple changes during pregnancy and breastfeeding, I recommend breast lift surgery after you finish having children and have stopped breastfeeding.
Wear Proper Support
Because of the way gravity can affect the body, wearing a supportive bra post-surgery can help you increase the longevity of your breast lift. Wearing ill-fitting bras or avoiding them all together may cause your breasts to sag faster than usual. It’s especially important to wear supportive gear when you engage in physical activity because the rigorous movement can increase the effects of gravity on your body.
Take Care of Your Skin
As previously mentioned, skin elasticity, age and genetics can all play a role in how long your breast lift results last. While aging and genetic factors cannot be prevented, skin elasticity can be improved by avoiding prolonged sun exposure and always wearing sunscreen with a SPF of 30 or higher.
After your surgery, I will provide you with detailed instructions and guidelines to help you maintain the results of your procedure. I have decades of experience performing breast lifts, so I can guide you through expected outcomes and craft an individualized plan tailored for your needs.
