Liposuction is one of the most popular plastic surgeries in the country, but it’s also one of the most misunderstood ones. Many people see liposuction as an alternative to weight loss, giving you your ideal physique without the need for diet and exercise. The reality is quite different. Weight loss occurs when your body uses up the fat it has stored in its fat cells, making your existing fat cells smaller. This is why, when you lose weight, you typically notice a change in all or most areas of your body – abdomen, legs, arms, “double chin,” etc.
Liposuction, on the other hand, manually removes fat cells from one or more specific and relatively small areas. Rather than a substitute for weight loss, liposuction should be used to address stubborn areas of unwanted fat. To learn more about what liposuction can do, check out my video below:
Liposuction is a very valid, beneficial procedure, but only in the correct circumstances and for the correct patients. In fact, my patients with smaller areas may be candidates for my Band Aid Liposuction, an in-office procedure that uses gentle numbing (rather than general anesthesia) for limited recovery time. To find out if liposuction is the right option for you, schedule a plastic surgery consultation with me, double board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. John L. LeRoy. As a double board-certified plastic surgeon, I spend most of my time addressing my patients’ need to feel confident in their appearance. As heartwarming as it is to see my patients enjoy their results, I also know that there are plenty of people in our community with other needs as well. To lend a hand and give back to the metro area that I’m proud to be a part of, I host several charity contests every year. During the contests, I ask for your help to identify Georgia organizations that are helping those in need in our local area. After your nominations and votes have determined a winner, I award the winning charity a $1,000 donation. This week, I’m excited to kick off my first charity contest of 2018.
Winter 2018 Category: Kids and Teens
In order to spread the donations among many types of organizations, we choose a category for each contest. This season’s category is Kids and Teens. You can nominate any charity that serves kids and/or teenagers in some way, whether it’s a children’s home, a benefit for ailing kids, a charity that prepares kids for a more successful future, etc. Nominations just need to fit the criteria listed in the details below, and past winners (such as The Tree House Inc. and Calvary Children’s Home) are not eligible for future contests.
Charity Contest Details
My charity contests are conducted through my social media – primarily my Facebook page. Here’s what you can do:
Between January 18th and February 2nd, 2018, visit the John LeRoy Facebook Page and look for the post that invites you to submit a nomination – it will be the top post on my timeline. Comment on this post to tell us what charity you want to nominate. Your nomination must meet the following criteria:
The organization must belong to the designated category — “charities that serve kids and/or teens.” Organizations in other categories will not be eligible to win.
The charity must hold a 501(c)(3) non-profit distinction or be a valid and charitable crowdfunding page.
The charity must be in Georgia.
Each nominator may only nominate one charity.
The charity must contribute to a greater good, identifiable through a published mission statement.
The charity may not be a previous charity contest winner (recent winners include TJ and Friends Foundation, Genesis JOY House Homeless Shelter, The Tree House Inc., and Remembering Ruthie Rescue).
When all the nominations are in, we’ll review them and choose up to four finalists. The finalists will be posted on February 5th, 2018.
Between February 5th and February 16th, 2018, return to my Facebook page and look for the post inviting you to vote for a final winter.
After tallying all the votes, we’ll announce the winning charity (and give them their $1,000 donation) on February 19th, 2018.
As a plastic surgeon, my favorite part of the job is seeing my patients enjoy their cosmetic surgery results and embrace their new self-confidence. But my seasonal charity contest gives me an opportunity to go beyond my own patients and help people with a variety of other needs as well. I consider it a privilege to be able to serve the Atlanta area in both capacities, and I’m grateful for your help in finding the best ways to contribute to the community.
If you’re like many of my facelift patients in this age of technology, you’ve already taken advantage of the internet and done some research about the basics of face lifts. You probably know the goals of the surgery, the expected recovery time, the typical incisions and scars, etc. But every patient has questions they haven’t found online that they’re too embarrassed to ask. Rest assured that after 24 years as a double board-certified plastic surgeon, I’ve heard it all. Here are answers to some of the questions many of my patients are self-conscious about:
How much am I really putting my health at risk?
There’s no such thing as a risk-free surgery (or any risk-free medical procedure for that matter). But as long as your face lift is performed by a board-certified plastic surgeon (preferably one who specializes in facelifts) in a safe medical environment, the risk is extremely low. A recent study in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal found the rate of major complications to be just 1.8%. To keep the risk particularly low, most of my patients opt for my specialized Band Aid Mini Facelift – a minimally invasive procedure that uses gentle numbing rather than general anesthesia.
I’ve been experiencing some constipation after my facelift. Is this something to be concerned about? What can I do about it?
Constipation is a common side effect of pain medications, so it’s not something to be concerned about. I recommend drinking plenty of water and trying apple juice or prune juice. If this doesn’t help, take three tablespoons of Milk of Magnesia, with a second dose in four hours if you haven’t had relief before then.
Is there anything I can do to prevent that “wind tunnel” look, or is it just a risk I have to take?
If a facelift is performed correctly, you should never look “windblown.” You can prevent this by choosing the right plastic surgeon – one with extensive experience, board certification, and a specialty in the procedure. Be sure to look at plenty of facelift before and after photos for the surgeon to see if you like his/her aesthetic taste and to make sure they haven’t given any of their patients the “wind tunnel” look.
How soon after my facelift can I have sex?
After your surgery, you should gauge your readiness by how much you can and cannot do without discomfort. There is no specific timeline for when your body will be healed enough for intimacy. However, if you’re a woman using oral contraceptives, keep in mind that the antibiotics you will be taking after surgery will interfere and make your birth control ineffective. A typical five-day course of antibiotics will stay in your system for ten days, so be sure to use another form of birth control if you have sex during this time.
Hopefully the facelift Q&A above gives you some answers you’ve been looking for. But remember, when you reach the point of choosing a plastic surgeon, you need to find someone you can speak to openly. Honest communication is crucial for a healthy and successful surgery, so on top of searching for a board-certified plastic surgeon, feel free to consult with several surgeons to see which one makes you feel most comfortable. To find out if I may be a good fit, schedule a consultation with me, Dr. John LeRoy. Plus, for more cosmetic surgery tips, new blogs, and more, follow me on Facebook, Twitter, and Google+.
For many of us, the new year is an opportunity to set our sights on a successful year ahead with meaningful goals. One of the most common New Year’s Resolutions is to lose weight. As long as you focus and set reasonable goals, weight loss is absolutely doable, but sometimes there’s more to the process. As a double board-certified plastic surgeon, I often work with patients who have reached their goal weight but now have excess sagging skin or a stubborn bulge or two of fat. I may not be able to help you with weight loss, but if you reach your goals and find that your new physique needs some polishing, there are plenty of options available.
Tummy Tuck or Band Aid Tummy Tuck
Many people who lose significant amounts of weight will have looser skin remaining on their abdomen. While our skin is rather “elastic,” it can’t also constrict enough to remain firm while the fat underneath shrinks. In this case, a tummy tuck can remove excess skin and give you a more taut, toned look. Some patients, especially women who have had children, also have some laxity in their abdominal muscles, and this can be improved with a tummy tuck as well. Other than a traditional tummy tuck, you may be a candidate for a minimally invasive Band Aid Tummy Tuck, an extended tummy tuck (which reaches the “love handles”), or a circumferential tummy tuck (which treats the back as well as the sides and the front of the abdomen).
Arm Lift or Band Aid Arm Lift
Another common “problem area” after weight loss is the upper arm. Aging alone can cause the thin skin on the underside of the upper arm to sag, and weight fluctuations make this more dramatic. An arm lift (or a Band Aid Arm Lift for patients who have less excess skin and don’t need as much improvement) removes excess skin and gives the arms a more firm and youthful shape.
Liposuction or Band Aid Liposuction
As much work as you put into losing weight, all you can do is cause your body to lose fat – you can’t choose where that fat comes from. This is why many patients find that even after all their hard work, they still have a stubborn bulge or two that bothers them. Liposuction (or Band Aid Liposuction for smaller areas) is designed to polish off these areas and produce a more desirable contour for patients who are already at or near their goal weight.
Breast Lift
Women who lose weight often lose fat from their breast as well, and unfortunately, this can cause the breasts to droop more than they normally would. For these women, a breast lift can restore the breasts to a more youthful shape without changing their size. Or, for women who do want to change their breast size, a lift can be paired with a breast augmentation or a breast reduction.
Neck Lift
Another area this is often left with sagging skin after weight loss is the area under the chin and the neck. This can make you look older or heavier than you truly are. If this is the case, a neck lift can remove the excess skin, tighten the underlying neck muscles, and give you a more slender and rejuvenated neck and chin.
Facelift or Band Aid Mini Facelift
Fat can make the face look fuller and more youthful, but when you lose weight, it can appear to make your face age quickly. Signs of aging you may have had before can be more noticeable now thanks to a slimmer profile. Fortunately, you don’t need to exchange one cosmetic issue for another. A facelift (or in many cases my minimally invasive Band Aid Mini Facelift) can restore firmness to your skin and reposition the supporting muscle and other facial tissue to give you a more naturally vibrant look.
Mommy Makeover or Other Combinations
Just like you rarely gain weight in one area alone, many patients find themselves with sagging skin in multiple areas after successful weight loss. For this reason, it’s very common to combine multiple procedures at the same time, giving you a more comprehensive result and less recovery time overall.
When you’re first getting started on your weight loss journey, it can feel like you have a long road ahead. But if you keep yourself on the right path and take it one day at a time, you can reach your goal weight. When you do, I’ll be here to help you enjoy your results even more.
