As our bodies experience normal physical changes from causes such as childbirth, the aging process and weight fluctuations, we may notice that excess fat and skin start to accumulate in the midsection. However, even with vigorous exercise and a strict diet, eliminating excess fat in the abdominal area can be difficult. Since it can be difficult to lose this stubborn fat, an abdominoplasty, or tummy tuck, is a great way to repair separated muscles and eliminate excess fat while toning and contouring the surrounding skin in the stomach area.
Doing research before undergoing a plastic surgery procedure is something that I, Dr. John L. LeRoy, always recommend to my patients. Before you undergo a tummy tuck, you should consider and learn more about the intricacies of the procedure to find out if it’s right for you.
1. Plan to be at a stable weight before your tummy tuck
It’s important to note that a tummy tuck is not a substitute for dieting and exercise. You should plan to follow a healthy lifestyle both before and after your procedure to help maintain your results. In the six to twelve months leading up to your surgery, you should be about 10-15 pounds away from your desired weight. After your procedure, you should keep in mind that any major weight loss or gain can undo and alter the toned look achieved from your surgery.
2. Learn about the different types of tummy tucks
There are many types of tummy tuck procedures that I perform and each one has different expected results. However, my most popular procedure is my signature Band Aid Tummy Tuck.
This treatment uses gentle numbing, is less invasive than a traditional tummy tuck and is designed for patients who are a healthy weight and want to lose excess skin and fat. Additionally, I use smaller incisions that only target the areas that need the most attention. By analyzing your unique situation and concerns, I can help you decide which tummy tuck procedure would work best for you.
3. A tummy tuck will leave a scar
Over the years, there have been plenty of innovations in the way that a tummy tuck is performed, however, scarring is still an inevitable part of the procedure. Patients should expect a scar to form along their horizontal incision line that runs from hip to hip, right above the pubic bone. The scar will fade over time, but is easily concealed below under garments. I work to make sure any visible scarring is as minimal as possible. I also strategically place any incisions I make in areas that can be easily hidden with clothing and swimwear.
If you are unsatisfied with the appearance of your neck and chin and are interested in removing the excess fat in that area, you might be considering either liposuction or non-surgical fat reduction as possible solutions. While these procedures are similar to each other, there are a number of differences that can help you determine which one is right for you. I, Dr. John L. LeRoy, have extensive experience with fat reduction and removal and want to share my recommendations with those considering treatment.
Since liposuction involves physically removing fat, I can treat whatever I can see. That means I can effectively remove the majority of the fat tissue in one session, which eliminates the need for multiple treatments. This procedure also isn’t as invasive as you might think. With my signature Band Aid Liposuction treatment, I can perform the procedure in-office using gentle numbing. After treatment, patients are typically able to recover quickly and can even drive themselves home if they choose not to have conscious sedation.
Non-surgical fat reduction is a bit different because it either warms or cools fat cells in order to remove them. That means that only about 30% of fat is removed per session. Additionally, this fat loss occurs overtime as the body naturally eliminates fat cells. This requires patients to return to the office for multiple treatments and also results in them waiting longer to notice their results.
Check out the video below to learn more about the ways liposuction and non-surgical fat reduction differ from one another.
Because the success of fat removal depends on the elasticity of your skin, I highly recommend scheduling a consultation to discuss the best course of action for your individual concerns. While I, Dr. John L. LeRoy, specialize in plastic surgery and am known for my range of Band Aid procedures, including the Band Aid facelift that I developed in 1997, I understand that sometimes my patients are looking for non-surgical ways to freshen up their look. My non-surgical offerings can treat a wide variety of facial concerns and can help to improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, skin texture, acne scarring, hyperpigmentation and more. I’ve highlighted a few of the most popular treatments that I commonly recommend for those looking to refresh their face without the need for surgery.
Band Aid Laser Skin Resurfacing
My Band Aid Laser Skin Resurfacing treatment is an ideal choice for those interested in non-surgical facial rejuvenation. I use DOT laser therapy to create microscopic dots on the face which causes the skin to generate new collagen and healthy skin cells. This increase in collagen production helps to improve the look of sun damage, acne and facial scarring, wrinkles, fine lines and overall skin texture.
Since Band Aid Laser Skin Resurfacing targets a multitude of facial concerns, ideal candidates for this procedure are patients of many ages, including those who have scarring or acne scarring or may have just started to notice signs of aging and feel it’s too early for a surgical procedure. Additionally, those who have undergone a plastic surgery procedure and want to refresh their look or those who want to target specific areas of the face through non-surgical means may also choose to have Band Aid Laser Skin Resurfacing. This procedure is performed in-office with gentle numbing and has less downtime than traditional laser resurfacing procedures.
Cosmetic Facial Injections
Facial injections have gained in popularity over the years for good reason. These treatments are non-surgical, take less than 15 minutes to administer and can give you a more natural and youthful appearance. In order to provide my patients with the best treatment for their skin, I offer Botox® and Dysport® injections and facial fillers, such as Restylane®, Juvéderm® and Radiesse®.
All cosmetic facial injections work to minimize the appearance of wrinkles, but they tackle the issue in two different ways. Botox® and Dysport® are commonly applied to the forehead and eyebrow area to relax the muscles and smooth out fine lines. Facial fillers target wrinkles on the lower face, such as the cheeks and mouth, and help to restore volume in these areas.
Band Aid Lip Augmentation
To help rejuvenate the appearance of thin or aging lips, I offer my signature Band Aid Lip Augmentation procedure. This non-surgical treatment uses Restylane® or Juvéderm® products along with a special technique I developed to shape and plump lips in order to balance your facial features and match your cosmetic goals. There may be some temporary minor swelling. The recovery period is quick with no downtime and the results typically last for up to six months.
As you can see, I offer a wide range of non-surgical facial treatments to help you rejuvenate and refresh your appearance. If you’re interested in learning more about the non-surgical, cosmetic and plastic surgery services that I offer, schedule an appointment with me, double board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. John L. As we age, it is common to experience lax skin and muscle on the neck. However, something that varies about these concerns is how they are treated. Factors such as age, severity and the patient’s individual needs help to determine exactly what the best course of treatment is for you. While a neck lift may be the best option for some patients, procedures such as a facelift and liposuction can be performed to improve the appearance of this area as well. To help you determine if neck lift surgery is the best option for your needs, I, Dr. John L. LeRoy, have broken down what a good candidate for neck lift surgery looks like and what you should know about this treatment.
What is Neck Lift Surgery?
A neck lift, also known as a lower rhytidectomy, is a surgical procedure that aims to improve the signs of aging in the neck and lower jawline. My Band Aid neck lift procedure is performed in-office with gentle numbing. Since this procedure is less invasive than traditional neck lift surgery, the recovery period is much quicker.
For those undergoing a neck lift, you should expect excess fat to be sculpted or redistributed, underlying tissue to be repositioned, muscle to be tightened and liposuction to be used to remove excess fat. I will always tailor this procedure to the patient’s specific needs and the treatment will match their unique concerns.
Who is a Good Candidate for Neck Lift Surgery?
Conditions that neck lift surgery can treat include loose neck skin, muscle banding in the neck, excess fat under the chin and overall excess fat and skin in the lower face. The excess skin that forms on the neck can be caused by a number of reasons including gravity due to normal aging, genetics, and weight gain to name a few. The type of treatment that you may need depends on your individual concerns and the overall state of your skin.
If you are happy with the way your upper face looks or if you feel that you aren’t ready for a facelift, a neck lift may be an option for you. Another sign is when your neck looks out of place compared with the rest of your face. Good candidates include those who are healthy, do not smoke, have a positive attitude and have realistic expectations for their surgery.
Ultimately, figuring out whether or not a neck lift is the best choice for you is a personal and complex decision. I have extensive experience with treating a diverse set of facial concerns and signs of aging, so no matter what your concerns are, I am well equipped to assess your unique situation and to help guide you through your treatment options.
