Study Suggests New Saline Breast Implant Design May Reduce Breast Surgery Complications

The term lumen may conjure images of cellular diagrams from college biology, but according to a study published in the September issue of Aesthetic Surgery Journal, a new double lumen saline breast implant design may be the key to reducing the risk of breast surgery complications like capsular contracture or rippling sometimes associated with breast augmentation.

By definition, a lumen refers to a hollow area within the middle of a tubular structure or organ. This new double lumen breast implant features a series of silicone elastomer shells (nested within each other) filled with sterile saline solution. The theory with the new design is that the multiple shell layers can better control the way the saline solution shifts to prevent rippling of breast implants or irregular textures underneath the skin after implantation.

The new design, known currently as the IDEAL Implant, is undergoing a 10-year study of its safety and effectiveness before being introduced for consumer use; however, initial findings reported in the article boast satisfaction rates over 90% for the breast augmentation and breast revision surgery patients who received the new implant type during the initial study as well as satisfaction rates over 93% from the surgeons who used the new breast implant technology. Most noteable at this point in time was the technology’s lower rate of implant wrinkling (3.8% of primary augmentations and 12% of revision patients) and incidence of capsular contracture or (3.8% of primary augmentations and 8.2% or revisionary breast surgery).

Breast augmentation has long been one of the top requested plastic surgery procedures within the U.S. Additionally, minimally invasive cosmetic procedures like the mini facelift or Band Aid Facelift continue to remain popular for their reduced recovery time and approachable price point. It’s important; however, to be wary of any cosmetic procedure marketed as “minimally invasive” that seems too good to be true.

All of my Band Aid Plastic Surgery procedures like Band Aid Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery), Band Aid Liposuction, and Band Aid Tummy Tuck are designed to address isolated, small areas of cosmetic concern. Because their purpose is so specific, and the treatment areas are relatively contained, they can be performed in-office using gentle numbing (local anesthetic). This is not the case with breast augmentation, in my opinion. Breast surgery involves a treatment area that is dense with nerves and thicker layers of muscle and tissue to navigate.

Though some plastic surgeons may offer a minimally invasive type of breast augmentation, it is not something that I feel is in any patient’s best interest given the possibility of breast surgery complications if the proper safety precautions aren’t followed. I only perform breast surgery like breast augmentation, breast reduction, and breast lift in a hospital with the assistance of a qualified anesthesiologist and surgical team.

Despite the appeal and convenience the latest and greatest plastic surgery techniques may seem to offer, it’s vital that patients research their prospective surgeon as well as the specific surgical technique to ensure it’s been deemed safe by medical governing bodies. Even though this research may seem superfluous, in-depth patient education is an important part of enhancing satisfaction with your plastic surgery results as well as minimizing the need for secondary procedures like breast revision surgery to correct previous surgical results.
