Back to School Plastic Surgery!? Article Examines Trend of College Students in India Going Under the Knife

If your summer has been filled with graduation celebrations like ours have, you’ve probably become a professional at picking out the perfect graduation gift: a piece of jewelry, a new set of sheets for a dorm room….a consultation with a plastic surgeon. It may sound a bit far-fetched, but a study on plastic surgery trends in India authored by the British Guardian reveal that it’s not so uncommon for the country’s incoming college students to seek cosmetic procedures, especially facial procedures, in order to maximize their first impressions on teachers and peers.

One of the articles young interviewees states, “Personality is important but when you first meet someone it is how you look and how you present yourself that counts.”

The article’s contributors attribute the surge in cosmetic surgery interest to the ever-expanding population of the country and the somewhat stagnant amount of desirable job openings (a ripple effect of the economic crunch felt round the world over the past year.) Indian teenage women are seeking cosmetic procedures such as: liposuction of a double chin, surgery of the nose (rhinoplasty), and lip enlargement through dermal injections (Restylane® and Juvederm®.) Young Indian men are not immune from the new trend; seeking male breast reduction (gynecomastia) most frequently.

Dr. John LeRoy, while a major proponent of cosmetic surgery to boost self-confidence, urges all patients to thoroughly examine their reasons for wanting a procedure. Many young people approach cosmetic surgery before their bodies are done growing and may be dissatisfied if they try and alter something that will transition dramatically as they continue to grow. Therefore, it’s imperative that patients select experienced plastic surgeons that understand and maintain realistic surgical expectations.
