What Exactly Makes a Person Look Older?
If you were to ask people to explain what it is that makes an aging person look older, most would say it’s wrinkles. This seems to be the go-to feature that people associate with aging. However, there are many ways in which the aging process changes your appearance, and there are several traits that can give away your age. As a double board-certified plastic surgeon who has been working with patients for over twenty years, I have a passion for educating others about my areas of expertise. In that interest, this breakdown can help you have a better understanding about the many forms aging can take and the ways you can fight them.
Wrinkles
In the earlier stages (often the late 20s and early 30s), signs of aging can begin to appear in the form of a few expression lines. In areas like the forehead, the outer corners of the eyes, and the space between the eyebrows, the muscles you use to make facial expressions can develop creases which appear as wrinkles in your skin. As the years progress, fat deposits will shift and the skin loses some of its firmness, which leads wrinkles to develop around the mouth and nose, above the upper lip, and on the front of the chin.
Facial Structure
Few of my plastic surgery patients actually recognize how much their underlying facial structure can change with age – they think of aging as something that happens to their skin. In actuality, facial fat often fades and shifts so that you develop “hollows” in your cheeks while developing more fullness around the jowl area. Similarly, facial muscles can shift and lose tone. At the same time, bones can lose volume as well, and because cartilage may continue to grow, some patients notice their ears or nose becoming longer.
Sagging Skin
When you’re young, your body produces plenty of collagen and elastin – unique proteins that keep skin firm and smooth. These proteins are constantly being broken down and replaced, but the problem is that as you get older, your body produces less and less of them. That means that your skin gradually has less ability to maintain its youthful firmness, and this is what gives rise to common problems like jowls and sagging skin on the neck. While it’s often at its most noticeable on the face, this same process happens to other areas of the body as well, like the arms, legs, chest, and more.
Wrinkles, facial restructuring, and sagging skin all combine together to create an aging appearance, and it’s a combination of all of them that gives away your age. Why is it important to have an understanding of the complexity of aging? Recognizing this concept is instrumental in helping you rejuvenate your appearance in a natural-looking way. Instead of solely focusing on your wrinkles and expecting to truly look like a younger you, aim for procedures which can actually address aging in a well-rounded way. While this might sound like a more extensive process, it can actually be done in a minimally invasive way with procedures like my Band Aid Facelift or a Band Aid Micro Mini Face Lift. While they are surgeries, both of these procedures are performed in-office using gentle numbing rather than general anesthesia. Whether it’s a specialized cosmetic surgery like a Band Aid Facelift or another procedure or combination of treatments (like nonsurgical skin tightening, injectables, or laser skin resurfacing), taking a more well-rounded approach to your facial rejuvenation can help you get the results you want rather than a half-hearted improvement.

The Basics of Breast Reduction Surgery
Every person has their own idea of the way they want their body to look, and the breasts are no exception. That’s why board-certified plastic surgeons like myself perform a variety of procedures to enlarge, reduce, and reshape the breasts toward each patient’s desired results. In the case of breast reduction, though, most patients want more than a cosmetic change – they’re looking for a solution to the neck pain, back pain, shoulder dents, and other issues that arise from large breasts. To learn more about this liberating surgery, take a look at my helpful video below.
Every plastic surgery patient that walks through my door wants to feel more confident in his/her appearance. Some, however, also have another motivation. In the case of breast reduction, I’m honored to be able to help so many patients be more comfortable (both physically and emotionally) on a daily basis. If you’re considering breast reduction or another type of plastic surgery, schedule a consultation with me, Dr. John L. LeRoy. Facial Rejuvenation for Men
Most people associate everything aesthetic with women rather than men. While women do still account for the majority of plastic surgeries, male patients are growing in number. Each patient has his/her own motivations for making a change, whether it’s to look younger in a competitive and energetic environment or simply to feel more confident on a daily basis. Regardless of the reasons more men are now feeling comfortable getting cosmetic procedures, there are certainly differences between the way men and women approach facial rejuvenation.
Popular Anti-Aging Procedures for Men
In terms of plastic surgery for a younger look, the most popular procedure for men is eyelid surgery (with over 28,000 surgeries performed for men in the US in 2016), followed by facelifts and then neck lifts. However, nonsurgical facial rejuvenation is where we see truly astounding numbers. Over 450,000 Botox® or Dysport® treatments were performed for men in 2016, making it their favorite cosmetic treatment. These injections were followed next by certain types of facial fillers, photo rejuvenation, chemical peels, microdermabrasion, skin tightening, and laser treatments.
Special Considerations in Facial Rejuvenation for Men
For men, recovery time is often a very important factor, especially for the men whose careers are the reason behind their procedures. This is likely the reason we’re seeing so many men getting non-surgical treatments, and it’s also the reason I place a strong emphasis on ease of recovery in my surgeries for men. In addition to keeping men’s procedures as minimally invasive as possible, I also put a greater focus on minimal scarring and natural-looking results for men. After a facelift, for instance, women tend to have enough hair that they can more easily conceal scarring, while men often do not. The specialized Band Aid Mini Facelift I developed and have been performing for 20 years actually addresses all of these concerns at the same time with half the recovery time and far less scarring, swelling, bruising, and cost than a traditional face lift.
Men and women may have different reasons for seeking plastic surgery, and they may have different priorities for their results, but one thing is constant – cosmetic procedures need to be tailored to each individual patient. To discuss what surgical or nonsurgical treatments may be able to give you the younger look you’re aiming for, schedule a consultation with me, Dr. John L. LeRoy. Why Do Some Facelifts Look More Natural than Others?
All of my facelift patients feel differently about how private or public they want their surgery to be. Some are very open about their experience and are happy to share all the details with their friends, family members, acquaintances, baristas, etc. Many other patients prefer that no one knows except a spouse or close friend. Of course, this choice is each patient’s own to make as they wish. Regardless of whether they want their facelift to be a secret, though, everyone wants a natural-looking result. That begs the question, what actually makes some facelifts look more natural than others?
When a face lift looks unnatural, it’s usually because the patient’s skin actually looks like it’s been pulled up or to the side, almost as if their skin is being blown back by a heavy wind. The reason this looks odd is because our underlying facial structure itself changes with age. Not only does the outer skin become thinner and start to sag, but the fat, muscle, and even bone in the face will lose shape and volume. For this reason, a natural-looking facelift needs to focus significantly on the underlying tissue as well, rather than putting all the focus into the skin.
An important factor in getting a facelift result that still looks like yourself is finding the right surgeon. Getting the correct aesthetic balance between facial structure and skin correction is a finely-tuned skill that requires a wealth of experience as well as a good aesthetic eye. For so many of my facelift patients, this is why they choose me to perform their surgery – because I’ve been specializing in face lifts for over thirty years.
On top of simply having the right surgical skills, a good face lift surgeon also knows not to take a patient’s surgery to the extreme. In this day and age, modern medicine offers so many ways to fight aging in a minimally invasive (or even noninvasive) way – Botox®, facial fillers, laser procedures, non-surgical skin tightening, etc. Because of this, there’s no need to make your facelift so extreme that it’ll take twenty years for your jowls to re-appear. It’s better to keep your facelift natural enough that you love your results as soon as you’ve recovered, because it’s so easy to treat new signs of aging that will appear with these other methods. In fact, for most of my patients, I use this approach by performing the unique Band Aid Mini Facelift that I developed. This minimally invasive version of the facelift is performed in-office using gentle numbing. It focuses on natural-looking results while requiring just half the recovery time of a typical face lift. This allows patients to have an easier surgical experience while attaining the results they’re looking for.
Getting a facelift result you love is all about looking like a younger version of yourself, rather than taking it to the farthest extreme possible. Fortunately, that’s my expertise.
