Why Do Some Facelifts Look More Natural than Others?

All of my facelift patients feel differently about how private or public they want their surgery to be. Some are very open about their experience and are happy to share all the details with their friends, family members, acquaintances, baristas, etc. Many other patients prefer that no one knows except a spouse or close friend. Of course, this choice is each patient’s own to make as they wish. Regardless of whether they want their facelift to be a secret, though, everyone wants a natural-looking result. That begs the question, what actually makes some facelifts look more natural than others?

Why Do Some Facelifts Look More Natural than Others

When a face lift looks unnatural, it’s usually because the patient’s skin actually looks like it’s been pulled up or to the side, almost as if their skin is being blown back by a heavy wind. The reason this looks odd is because our underlying facial structure itself changes with age. Not only does the outer skin become thinner and start to sag, but the fat, muscle, and even bone in the face will lose shape and volume.  For this reason, a natural-looking facelift needs to focus significantly on the underlying tissue as well, rather than putting all the focus into the skin.

An important factor in getting a facelift result that still looks like yourself is finding the right surgeon. Getting the correct aesthetic balance between facial structure and skin correction is a finely-tuned skill that requires a wealth of experience as well as a good aesthetic eye. For so many of my facelift patients, this is why they choose me to perform their surgery – because I’ve been specializing in face lifts for over thirty years.

On top of simply having the right surgical skills, a good face lift surgeon also knows not to take a patient’s surgery to the extreme. In this day and age, modern medicine offers so many ways to fight aging in a minimally invasive (or even noninvasive) way – Botox®, facial fillers, laser procedures, non-surgical skin tightening, etc. Because of this, there’s no need to make your facelift so extreme that it’ll take twenty years for your jowls to re-appear. It’s better to keep your facelift natural enough that you love your results as soon as you’ve recovered, because it’s so easy to treat new signs of aging that will appear with these other methods. In fact, for most of my patients, I use this approach by performing the unique Band Aid Mini Facelift that I developed. This minimally invasive version of the facelift is performed in-office using gentle numbing. It focuses on natural-looking results while requiring just half the recovery time of a typical face lift. This allows patients to have an easier surgical experience while attaining the results they’re looking for.

Getting a facelift result you love is all about looking like a younger version of yourself, rather than taking it to the farthest extreme possible. Fortunately, that’s my expertise.
