If you’ve been a plastic surgery patient or a social media follower of mine for a while, then you’re probably familiar with the quarterly contest that I run for local charity organizations. Once every season of the year, I host a social media charity contest that donates $1000 to one local charity that hasn’t previously won. Since many of my social media followers are members of the community, I like to ask for their input about which organization we should focus our resources on. We will pick the category of donation, but the specific entities who will receive the money are entirely dependent upon your vote. Over the years, we’ve helped some fantastic groups continue to make the community a better place. The nominations for this year will be within the category of animal shelters and rescue.
The Charity Contest Details Include:
Each of our social media charity contests have two separate phases. The first phase is the nomination process. During our nomination process, we’ll make a post on September 28th, 2018 that asks for recommendations on which local charity to select under the animal shelters and rescue category. For three weeks on the John L. LeRoy Facebook page, followers will nominate the animal shelter or rescue organization of their choice by commenting with their selection. Participants must only nominate an organization once and all previous winners will be omitted from the contest. To give each contender a fair chance, anyone who nominates more than once will be disqualified. The top four most popular nominations will become the finalists.
Once the finalists are chosen, the voting phase of the charity contest begins. During our voting process, Facebook followers will then vote between the four finalists and the winner with the most votes will receive the $1000 donation. The winner will be announced on October 26th, 2018.
Decades ago, I decided to become a double board-certified plastic surgeon with the goal of helping people. This motivation has not changed for me. I’m proud to serve my community and hosting this charity contest gives me a chance to help others beyond the realm of plastic surgery. This fall, I would greatly appreciate your assistance in finding a worthy animal shelter or rescue center for the $1000 donation. Keep an eye on my Facebook posts over the next few weeks and don’t forget to cast your vote!
If you’ve been following me and my work for a while, you probably know about my charity contests already. Each season, I host a social media charity contest, getting my followers’ input on local charities who could make great use of a $1,000 donation from my office. With your nominations and votes, I’ve been touched by some fantastic Georgia charities I’ve learned about, and I’ve been honored to be able to assist many of them and their causes. To make a difference in more lives throughout the Atlanta area, I recently started giving each contest a category (like pet-related charities, or organizations that help kids). This has helped me discover many smaller, more specialized charities. So, for my spring 2018 contest, I’m continuing this tradition and looking for organizations in a specific category: homelessness/poverty.
How the Charity Contest Works:
My social media charity contests have two stages: nomination and voting. From April 12th-April 27th, 2018, we invited our patients, friends, and followers to the John L. LeRoy Facebook page to nominate their favorite Georgia organizations that are dedicated to ending homelessness and poverty. We’ve now evaluated this list and chosen four finalists.
Those finalists have now been announced, and the final voting is open to everyone. Simply visit our Facebook page before May 11th, 2018, find the post at the top of the timeline that invites you to cast your vote, and comment with the name of the charity you feel should win the donation. Finally, we’ll announce the winner of the donation on Monday, May 14th, 2018.
I’m passionate about finding joy in every part of life and in helping others do the same, and while I’m able to do that every day at my plastic surgery office, these charity contests let me take it one step further. This spring, I would be honored to have your help in finding local charities that make a difference in Georgians’ lives every day, and I look forward to working with you to make our community a better place for all.
As a double board-certified plastic surgeon, I have the privilege of spending every day helping my patients gain newfound confidence in their appearance. There’s just nothing like seeing a patient look in the mirror (which used to be a stressful experience for them) and smile. But to truly fulfill my passion for giving back to my community, I want to help people who are beyond the reach of my plastic surgery services, too. That’s why, for several years, I’ve been holding social media charity contests so that my patients and supporters can help to find deserving local organizations who can do great work with my donations. And this week, my latest contest has just begun.
How it Works
My charity contest includes a few stages:
Until Friday, April 28th, 2017, anyone who “likes” and follows the John L. LeRoy, MD Facebook page can comment on the post at the top of the page to nominate their charity of choice. Our theme for the current contest is “children’s charities,” so nominated organizations should serve children in some capacity.
Between April 28th and May 1st, I will review the nominees and select up to four finalists.
From May 1st, 2017 through May 12th, 2017, anyone can vote on a winning children’s charity using the poll that will be on my Facebook page. Each person will only be able to vote once.
On May 15th, 2017, I will announce the winning organization on my Facebook page, and they will receive a donation of $1,000 to continue their valuable service to the community.
How to Get Involved
The nominations have already begun, so be sure to head to my Facebook page and enter yours! Just make sure your nomination meets these criteria:
The organization must belong to the designated category—the Spring 2017 category is “children’s charities” (any charity that benefits children). Organizations in other categories will not be eligible to win.
The charity must hold a 501(c)(3) non-profit distinction or be a valid and charitable crowdfunding page.
The charity must be in Georgia.
The nominator must be at least 16 years of age.
Each nominator may only nominate one children’s charity.
The charity must contribute to a greater good, identifiable through a published mission statement.
The charity may not be a previous charity contest winner (recent winners include Remembering Ruthie Rescue, Calvary Children’s Home, Little Nuggets Rescue, The Mastocytosis Society, and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital).
Giving back to those in need is such a moving experience, but there are just so many organizations in Georgia who are doing exceptional and necessary work. To everyone who has participated in my current charity contest or in any of my past ones, and to all of my valued plastic surgery patients who have enabled me to pursue opportunities like this, thank you for helping me find and support the fantastic organizations right in our own backyard.
Plastic surgery is one of those decisions you should be highly confident in before you move forward. It should not be an impulsive choice, but one based on thought, planning, and an investment in a happier future. When patients are researching their options and they find out that I offer a specialized line of procedures including the Band Aid Facelift, Band Aid Liposuction, and more, they’re excited to learn that these surgeries are performed in-office with gentle numbing, rather than with general anesthesia. Feeling fearful of being “all the way under” is very common, but few patients realize the full extent of the benefits local anesthesia can provide.
Advantages of Using Local Anesthesia
One of the most profound benefits of local anesthesia is that it is significantly easier on your body than general anesthesia, which means that many of the most serious risks surgery carries are strongly reduced. While severe complications from plastic surgery are already extremely rare (as long as the procedure is performed by a board-certified plastic surgeon), local anesthesia can reduce the risks even further for the right patients and the right procedures.
In addition to lowering surgical risks, opting for local anesthesia helps to make cosmetic surgery an easier and more pleasant experience because you’ll be able to return home the same day as your procedure, and you won’t have the grogginess and nausea that typically follow general anesthesia. But as thrilled as many patients are that their post-surgery hours will be easier, the more attractive benefit is usually the reduced recovery time. General anesthesia itself is an experience your body needs to recover from, on top of healing from the cosmetic surgery itself, because general anesthesia also requires an endotracheal tube and intravenous medication, which both add to the post-operative downtime as well. Local anesthesia, on the other hand, dramatically reduces the amount of recovery your body needs, which means you’ll be back on your feet significantly sooner—typically twice as quickly as you would after general anesthesia.
Notes to Keep in Mind
While local anesthesia can make the plastic surgery process easier and more pleasant in a number of ways, there are a few cautions to keep in mind. First, the safety and results of any surgery are dependent on the surgeon as well as the patient’s commitment to following pre- and post-surgical instructions. If you encounter a cosmetic surgeon who offers only local anesthesia and never performs surgery with general anesthesia, this should be a red flag, because a valid board-certified plastic surgeon must be well-trained in procedures using general anesthesia.
It’s also important to recognize that local anesthesia is only beneficial under the right circumstances. Your medical history and the extensiveness of the surgery you need will determine whether you are a candidate for a Band Aid Facelift (or another type of Band Aid procedure). While everyone wants their surgery to be as minimally invasive as possible, as a plastic surgeon, my goal is balancing your surgical experience with results that you will be happy with. At an in-person consultation, I will be able to make a recommendation about what type of procedure can best achieve your goals.
Plastic surgery is truly a balancing act—you’ll need to weigh your expected results, medical history, available recovery time, finances, aesthetic concerns, and more to find the ideal procedure and type of anesthesia for you. To start discussing your specific options, schedule a consultation with me, Dr. John L. LeRoy.
