We all have aspects of our appearance that we don’t love, whether it’s excess fat, signs of aging, an anatomical quirk, or what have you. So why isn’t everyone getting plastic surgery? While it actually is more common than most people realize, the cost is usually the largest issue that holds patients back. For that reason, the cost of cosmetic surgery is always one of the primary questions patients ask in an initial consultation. As a double board-certified plastic surgeon who specializes in facelifts, I’m happy to offer a bit of insight to help you budget for plastic surgery.
Cost of a Facelift
There are a number of variables that affect the price of a cosmetic surgery, like the surgeon’s experience, the location of the office (because some metro areas have higher costs of living than others), the extensiveness of your procedure, and more. For this reason, a true “average” isn’t really achievable, but various sources have put the average cost of a facelift anywhere between $7,000 and $12,000. At my own plastic surgery practice, a traditional facelift generally costs between $7,000 and $7,500, although many patients choose to add other facial rejuvenation procedures into the surgery, like an eyelid lift, a brow lift, and/or liposuction under the chin. This will raise the price of the facelift, but it will be much less expensive than if you had received each procedure in a separate surgery.
There is, however, another option that is significantly less expensive. In fact, the vast majority of my facelift patients actually choose to have the Band Aid Mini Facelift instead. The Band Aid Mini Facelift is a procedure I developed and have been performing with great success for twenty years. It’s performed in-office with gentle numbing rather than general anesthesia, and this is possible because of advanced, minimally invasive techniques. On top of an easier surgical process, the Band Aid Mini Facelift also has a much easier recovery, with about half the recovery time and much less swelling, bruising, and scarring than a traditional face lift. While it’s not suitable for a more extreme degree of aging, the Band Aid Mini Facelift is actually a great option for nearly all of my patients, offering the ability to take as much as a decade off your appearance with minimal inconvenience. Because it’s performed in-office and is less time-consuming, the Band Aid Mini Facelift costs less than $5,000, compared to over $7,000 for a conventional facelift*.
Plastic Surgery Expenses
When you’re planning the financial side of your cosmetic surgery, it’s important to know that you won’t just have one transaction. In fact, there are a number of fees involved, and they all vary from one patient to the next, but when you schedule a plastic surgery consultation, you’ll receive a more specific outline of the expenses you can expect. The primary costs involved in cosmetic surgery include:
Surgeon’s fee
Fee to use the operating room
Anesthesia fees
Specialty compression garments to wear after the surgery
Prescription medications
Pre-surgical medical tests
It’s not surprising that some forms of plastic surgery can carry a hefty price tag considering the amount of time, sources, and training that is required to perform it. But while the overall cost may give you sticker-shock, my patients truly come to their follow-up appointments and future appointments raving about how thrilled they are with their results and how strongly they feel that their new confidence is worth the price. Most doctors, surgeons, nurses, and other medical professionals will tell you that they chose the healthcare field because they wanted to help people, and Dr. John LeRoy did as well. But on top of helping his patients find a new self-confidence and youthful energy on a daily basis at his plastic surgery practice, Dr. LeRoy also extends his helping hands much farther. Every year, Dr. LeRoy holds several social media charity contests in order to find the local charities who are making a powerful difference in the community and who can put a $1,000 donation to great use. It’s that time of year again, because Dr. LeRoy’s Fall 2017 Social Media Charity Contest has just begun.
In order to benefit a variety of causes, Dr. LeRoy chooses a different category for each contest. This fall, the category is cancer-related organizations. The contest has a nomination phase and a voting phase, so here’s how it works:
Go to John LeRoy’s Facebook page between October 19th and November 3rd, 2017. Find the post at the top of the page that invites you to nominate an organization for the Fall 2017 Charity Contest.
Comment on that post with the name of your favorite Georgia organization that helps cancer patients, whether it funds research, promotes awareness, offers financial assistance, or manages a combination of projects. In order to be eligible, your nomination must meet the following criteria:
The organization must belong to the designated category—the fall 2017 category is “cancer-related charities”. Organizations in other categories will not be eligible to win.
The charity must hold a 501(c)(3) non-profit distinction or be a valid and charitable crowdfunding page.
The charity must be in Georgia.
Each nominator may only nominate one charity.
The charity must contribute to a greater good, identifiable through a published mission statement.
The charity may not be a previous charity contest winner (recent winners include Genesis JOY House Homeless Shelter, The Tree House Inc., Remembering Ruthie Rescue, and Calvary Children’s Home).
From these nominees, we will select up to four finalists, and they will be announced on John LeRoy‘s Facebook page on November 6th, 2017.
Between November 6th and November 17th, 2017, visit Dr. LeRoy’s Facebook page. The post at the top of the page will have a link where you can vote for a final winner. Each person will only be able to vote once, so be sure to tell your friends and family to vote, too!
The winning charity will be announced on Dr. LeRoy’s Facebook page on November 20th, 2017, and will receive a $1,000 donation.
These charity contests give Dr. LeRoy even more than an opportunity to give back. They give him a way to connect with the Atlanta area community, and they provide a platform where smaller, local charities can make their voices heard. All of us at Dr. LeRoy’s cosmetic surgery practice would be honored for each of you to be a part of it.
Breast augmentation, like any cosmetic surgery, is really all about putting a patient into their comfort zone by giving them a body that feels like home to them. Of course there are a great many ways to do this depending on your specific cosmetic concerns. For a breast augmentation, obviously the goal is to make the breasts larger, but you don’t want to go too far and be uncomfortable with breasts that are too large, either. So as a patient, how do you make sure you’re getting an implant type and size that will truly help you be your most beautiful and confident self?
It ultimately boils down to choosing the right plastic surgeon and having an open and clear line of communication with them. As a board-certified plastic surgeon who has seen tremendous success in my patients’ breast enhancement satisfaction, I have been able to pinpoint the size and type of implant needed to give each patient the results she wants. Breast size can have a serious impact on any woman’s self-confidence and even her physical comfort and health, so finding that perfect size and shape is an important part of the process. Your eyes are one of the first features that people see when they meet you. Depending on how you feel about your eyes’ appearance, this may be good news or bad news. As a board-certified plastic surgeon who specializes in facial rejuvenation, I have so many patients who come in and say, “My eyes have aged so quickly, and they make me look older and more tired than I actually feel.” Indeed, there are a number of ways that aging affects the appearance of your eyes, but fortunately there are just as many ways to make your eyes look young again. To offer some guidance, I’m taking a look at some of the most common cosmetic problems around the eyes and explaining what you can do to fight them.
Bags under the Eyes
Sometimes “puffiness” under the eyes can come from skin irritation, rubbing your eyes, or fluid retention, but if it seems to be a more persistent issue, it’s probably a combination of genetics and aging. We all have small pads of fat under our eyes, but these fat pads can slowly shift outward as we age, and particularly when they’re combined with the common aging symptom of thinning and sagging skin under the eyes, they can create “under-eye bags” that make you look tired. In this case, a lower blepharoplasty (or my unique minimally invasive Band Aid Lower Eyelid Surgery) can remove the fat pad and tighten the skin if needed.
Crow’s Feet
With all the countless little movements your facial muscles make throughout the day with every facial expression, it’s no wonder that over time, these muscles can become tense and hold onto their contracted shape. This creates visible wrinkles in the skin, such as crow’s feet, frown lines between the eyebrows, and creases across the forehead. To treat these particular lines correctly, you need to address the contracted muscle rather than just the skin above it, and this is precisely the purpose of Botox® and Dysport®. These two injectables (nearly identical solutions from two different brands) block the nerve receptors to these specific muscles, causing them to relax and smooth out so that the wrinkles will do the same.
Skin Laxity
One of the most well-known signs of aging is sagging skin. Collagen and elastin are components of the skin that create firmness and strength. While these components are constantly being broken down by our own body and by environmental factors (like sun exposure), young bodies produce enough of them to consistently replace the lost collagen and elastin. As we age our bodies produce less and less of them, allowing the skin to become thinner and to sag. The area around the eyes is no exception, but if it’s not quite bad enough to need cosmetic surgery, you may be a candidate for nonsurgical skin tightening. This noninvasive procedure applies targeted warmth to the treatment area, and when it reaches the deeper layers of the skin, this warmth enhances your collagen production. Over time and with a brief series of sessions, this leads to tighter, thicker, and smoother skin.
“Hooded” Eyelids
Some people naturally have more skin above their upper eyelids than others, but when the aging process kicks in and this extra skin begins to lose its firmness, it can droop along the top of the upper eyelids. These are often called “hooded” eyelids, and they can make people look like they’re narrowing their eyes in anger or like they’re half-asleep. To regain a more cheerful, approachable look, patients with this issue can choose to have upper eyelid surgery, also called upper blepharoplasty. Whether it’s performed in an operating room or in-office as my innovative Band Aid Upper Eyelid Surgery, this procedure removes the excess skin.
Dark Circles under the Eyes
There are a few different reasons that people can develop dark circles under their eyes that make them look older or tired. Some people simply have deeper-set eyes, and when their brow bone extends out too far (especially when they lose facial volume with age, causing the hollows under their eyes to become more pronounced), it casts a shadow on the hollow areas under the eyes. In this case, facial fillers like Restylane® can be injected into the hollow area to add volume and minimize the shadow’s effect. For other patients, dark circles under the eyes are caused by the skin thinning during the aging process. In this case, the best treatment is usually Band Aid Laser Skin Resurfacing. Using the advanced and minimally invasive technology of DOTâ„¢ Therapy, this treatment uses tiny columns of laser light to stimulate collagen production while also reducing fine line, wrinkles, age spots, scars, and more, leading to a strong reduction in dark circles under the eyes as well as providing other rejuvenating benefits.
Your eyes can say so much about your energy and your mood, but some parts of the aging process can make your eyes work against you so you longer look like your upbeat, energetic self. If getting a good night’s sleep doesn’t help, professional skin care and/or cosmetic surgery may be able to give you that younger and healthier look.
