At the plastic surgery office of Dr. John LeRoy, we have much to be grateful for this fall, including the continued support of the metro Atlanta area. To give back to our community, we’re hosting our third 2015 social media charity contest and we invite you to help us decide which local charity will receive our $1,000 donation. We’ve accepted your nominations and chosen the finalists, and now it’s time for you to cast your vote and help an area non-profit organization to continue their valued work.

To cast your vote, visit the Dr. John LeRoy Facebook page and find the post at the top of our timeline, inviting you to vote. Click the link in the post, which will take you to an anonymous poll where you can vote for any of the four finalists. The poll will close on Friday, October 30th, 2015, and the winning charity will be announced on Monday, November 2nd, 2015.

Who are the finalists?

Based on nominations for you and from other patients and Facebook followers of Dr. LeRoy, we’ve selected the following four charities as the finalists:

  • Jude’s Hospital for Children – This well-known organization serves children who are suffering from life-threatening illnesses, like cancer and sickle cell disease. By providing these children with free, specialized healthcare, and by continuing to research pediatric illnesses, St. Jude’s Hospital is a much-needed resource in the fight against childhood diseases.
  • Loving Arms Cancer Outreach – For patients who are battling cancer, their needs extend even beyond extensive medical care and affect their lives in emotional, financial, cosmetic, and time-consuming ways. Marietta-based Loving Arms Cancer Outreach serves these patients with a number of much-needed programs, like support groups, financial assistance, educational programs, survivor outreach efforts, and access to prostheses, wigs, scarves, and more.
  • Atlanta Food Bank – Hunger is a problem that affects families and individuals in all areas of metro Atlanta, and the Atlanta Food Bank serves a network of over 600 non-profit organizations in 29 Georgia counties. Since its founding in 1979, the Atlanta Food Bank has grown to serve the community with seven unique programs, including distributing food items to smaller food pantries, delivering prepared food to shelters and soup kitchens, and helping local families and individuals to apply for the benefits they need.
  • Blue Skies Ministries – For families who are dealing with the realities of pediatric cancer, the illness can take over every area of their lives. Founded by a mother who has been in their shoes, Blue Skies Ministries offers families a beach retreat where they can take a break, reconnect together, and restore their hope for the future.

The Beauty of Blepharoplasty

In his 22 years of surgical experience, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. John L. LeRoy has witnessed many patients come in feeling discouraged by not being able to correct the progression of aging eyes that tend to affect the entire appearance of the face or even functionality in eyesight.

Eyelid SurgeryEyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, is a procedure that revives the alert, aware appearance of your most rested state. The eye area is revitalized by removing excess skin and fat from the upper and/or lower eyelids. With eyelid surgery, patients see results that are subtle to the outside appearance, but beyond effective to the beholder.

Those with bags under the eyes, sagging upper eyelids, a puffy appearance, or obstructed vision due to any of these concerns are likely candidates for either traditional blepharoplasty of Dr. LeRoy’s specialized Band Aid version of the rejuvenating procedure. Band Aid Blepharoplasty is performed in-office with local anesthetic and typically requires less time to complete than  traditional eyelid surgery. Dr. LeRoy gently removes excess fat and sagging skin around the eyes while smoothing out the remaining skin. Combined, these approaches effectively rejuvenate troublesome areas of the eyes for a more youthful, refreshed appearance that doesn’t necessitate an excessive downtime.

New and Improved (or is it?): The Importance of Research with Plastic Surgery Technology

dr john leroyAs a board certified plastic and cosmetic surgeon who has worked in this industry for nearly twenty years, I have seen my fair share of the newest, latest, greatest, and best plastic surgery claims.  Although there have been remarkable strides made with plastic surgery technology, like the dramatic rejuvenation possible with wrinkle injectables and minimally invasive facelift procedures, it’s important for potential plastic surgery patients to remember that discretion remains a vital aspect when it comes to electing to have the latest plastic surgery procedure.

In a recent statement made by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (APSAPS), organization representatives urged patients to wait on more comprehensive, long-term data regarding stem cell technology for cosmetic use before pursuing the treatments.  Referencing the highly publicized stem cell procedures popular figures like actress Suzanne Summers and entertainer Madonna have reportedly undergone, the esteemed plastic surgery association stated that “although stem cell technology in the area of plastic surgery is very promising… scientific evidence is still insufficient.”

Creators of Pirates of the Caribbean 4 Refuse to Cast Actresses with Breast Implants

Plastic surgery is relatively common now, and it seems like everyone in Hollywood has had a cosmetic procedure. However, Entertainment Weekly published an article stating that Disney refused to cast women who had breast enhancement surgery in Pirates of the Caribbean 4 because the look was historically inaccurate. The casting sheet explicitly stated not to even audition if you’d received breast implants. Casting associates said they did not want anything to take away from the movie. If the cosmetic procedure had been done well and was not obvious, there was no issue. Creators of historically based movies, such as Pirates of the Caribbean 4, face dilemmas with aesthetic issues other than just plastic surgery; they also have to be careful about hair highlights, overly toned bodies, and tattoos.

It’s understandable that casting associates do not desire hiring actors who do not historically fit the part because of obvious plastic surgery.  However, it is hard to imagine that Disney producers could fully cast actors who’ve never had cosmetic surgery, but there is a chance that some actors slid by without having to admit their physical alterations. While cosmetic surgery is meant to change appearance, it does not have to look over done. Plastic surgery results, and even breast augmentation procedures, can be subtle. Before a plastic surgery procedure, Dr. LeRoy consults with his patients about their expected outcomes and their desired results.

While Dr. LeRoy has not coined a “Band Aid” breast procedure, he is highly practiced in subtlety. Unless the patient desires a dramatic plastic surgery result, Dr. LeRoy will perform the most minimal procedure possible to obtain the desired results.

Subtlety depends upon the plastic  surgeon, the type of cosmetic surgery, and the extent of the cosmetic procedure. For instance, if you go from an A cup to a D cup in breast implant size, it won’t look as subtle as if you only increase a size or two.
