While many patients believe that the surgery is the most significant part of a tummy tuck, the pre-surgical consultation is just as important. Not only does it allow the patient to express his or her concerns and preferred aesthetic, but it also allows Dr. John LeRoy to assess the goals of the patient and recommend the appropriate procedure(s) to achieve their desired look.
During your consultation, Dr. LeRoy takes the time to discuss your cosmetic goals as well as learn about your family medical history and lifestyle history. Family history may seem insignificant, but it can play a major role in helping maintain your safety during and after plastic surgery. Because cosmetic surgery is just that, surgery, Dr. LeRoy will take the time to prepare you mentally and physically for your procedure.
Based on patient feedback, Dr. LeRoy explains the different steps available to each client to achieve his or her desired look. He also takes the time to show all his patients examples of his work in before and after photos. While many patients are happy to take before and after photographs, some are not comfortable with their images being placed online. That being said, it’s important to realize that Dr. LeRoy takes every measure to ensure optimal patient comfort and can provide further before and after photos in person than those posted on his online gallery. Because Dr. LeRoy focuses on patient education and each patient may have additional questions, he dedicates a significant amount of time for each patient’s consultation to thoroughly explain each procedure, answer patient questions, and address any concerns.
A consultation is the best time for patients to learn the ins and outs of the procedures recommended to achieve their cosmetic surgery goals, the risks and costs associated with each procedure, as well as the expected recovery time and post-surgery support required.
Since some procedures are more comprehensive than others, Dr. LeRoy takes the time to explain the intricacies of each prospective surgery. Take tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) for example. Depending on a patient’s specific needs, there are different variations of tummy tuck surgery. Post weight loss (bariatric) surgery patients who wish to get rid of loose, hanging skin around their mid-section usually require a circumferential tummy tuck.
During this comprehensive procedure, Dr. LeRoy excises excess tissue all the way around the midsection and then tightens the skin and underlying muscles. A traditional tummy tuck involves excising excess tissue solely from the abdominal region and then tightening the remaining skin and muscles. Dr. LeRoy also offers a third option for tummy tuck surgery that is reserved for patients with only a small amount of excess skin in the abdominal region, his Band Aid Tummy Tuck. This particular procedure focuses on specific areas of concern and can be performed in-office with gentle numbing.

In 2010, Americans spent $10.7 billion on cosmetic enhancement procedures, according to the latest study from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS). As nonsurgical and minimally invasive procedures become increasingly popular, Atlanta plastic surgeon John LeRoy, MD is offering a more accessible and highly-effective option for cosmetic enhancement. He says the Band Aid procedures are designed as an alternative to traditional procedures, such as the facelift or liposuction, for patients in search of subtle aesthetic enhancement instead of a dramatic transformation.
With more than 9.3 million cosmetic procedures performed in 2010, 83% of the cosmetic procedures performed were nonsurgical in nature, highlighting a continuing trend toward less-invasive procedures. At his Atlanta plastic surgery practice, Dr. John LeRoy says he first noticed an interest towards mini procedures increase in 1997. In turn, he developed the Band Aid Facelift, a less-invasive approach to the traditional facelift.
The Band Aid Facelift was the first minimally invasive procedure Dr. John LeRoy developed at his plastic surgery practice in Atlanta. He has since refined Band Aid versions of blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery), brow lift, liposuction (body sculpting), and tummy tuck (abdominoplasty). Designed to create a subtle enhancement, Dr. LeRoy says he chose the name Band Aid because they do not require the heavy amount of surgical dressings or recovery time associated with more traditional cosmetic surgeries. However, Dr. LeRoy adds that some patients are better candidates for Band Aid procedures than others. “Band Aid surgeries are designed to target very specific cosmetic concerns in isolated areas for patients who are not yet in need of the traditional version. The best way to determine if a patient is a candidate for a Band Aid procedure or in need of traditional plastic surgery is to thoroughly discuss and examine his or her concerns during a consultation.”
As cosmetic enhancement becomes more prevalent in the U. S., Dr. LeRoy says less-invasive, more accessible versions of traditional plastic surgery, such as his Band Aid procedures, will continue to gain further support for the aesthetic healthcare industry. “Patients have begun seeking plastic surgery earlier in life than they once did. Instead of waiting until they need rejuvenation, they are starting to take care of concerns as soon as they begin to develop. The most important thing a patient should understand is that even though Band Aid procedures are convenient and effective, there are circumstances in which traditional plastic surgery is a more appropriate choice.”
