What to Know Before Considering Eyelid Surgery

popular eyelid surgeryRegardless of a person’s age or how they feel, premature signs of aging can occur. No one wants to look old before their time, especially when these aesthetic imperfections affect a feature as prominent as the eyes. This is part of the reason that eyelid surgery (also known as blepharoplasty) has remained one of the most commonly performed cosmetic surgery procedures in the US for decades now. To help patients gain a better understanding of this procedure and how it can help refresh the appearance of the face, I wanted to discuss a few things that people should know before pursuing eyelid surgery or band aid eyelid surgery.

Eyelid Surgery Can Be Performed in Different Ways

Eyelid surgery is not a one-size-fits-all procedure. During the surgery, I am able to remove excess skin and pockets of fat from the eyelids to help reduce a drooping or hooding effect that can make the eyes look tired. But depending on the patient’s needs, this can be performed on the upper lids, the lower ones, or both in some cases. I also offer my signature Band Aid eyelid surgery, a minimally invasive alternative performed in-office with gentle numbing that can provide outstanding, natural-looking results while cutting back on costs and post-surgery downtime.

Eyelid Surgery Can Help Men & Women

In fact, the procedure is equally popular among male and female patients. I have different techniques that I can utilize to ensure that male patients will not look feminine or drastically different after their eyelid surgery. Regardless of the patient’s gender, eyelid surgery is intended to provide a subtle tweak to the patient’s appearance, just a slightly younger version of themselves.

Eyelid Surgery Pairs Well with Other Procedures

It’s very common for patients to combine their eyelid lift with other cosmetic procedures of the face including facelift surgery, Band Aid mini facelift, a brow lift, and more. Doing so can help provide even more comprehensive anti-aging results and help the patient cut back on overall surgical costs accrued by having these procedures performed separately.

Eyelid Surgery Is Simple to Prepare For

Like any other cosmetic procedure, some preparation will be involved. Patients who smoke or use other nicotine products (including vaping and e-cigarettes) should cease to do so for at least 4 weeks before (and after) their surgery. Additionally, patients should avoid using anti-inflammatory medicines and herbal medicines (including Aspirin) for 2 weeks before and 1 week after eyelid surgery, to help reduce the risk of any complication during the procedure or recovery period. Patients should also make the necessary arrangements for transportation to and from their eyelid surgery procedure or Band Aid eyelid surgery as needed.

No matter which procedure alternative a patient eventually chooses, the results of eyelid surgery are long-lasting and truly incredible. Am I Too Young For A Facelift?

the difference between male and female breast reduction surgeryIt is no secret that cosmetic procedures are becoming more popular with younger demographics than in previous years.  Social media and video conferencing have brought our appearance into greater focus, leading younger age groups, such as millennials, to change how they address signs of aging.  In years past, patients would wait until their 60s before considering cosmetic procedures such as traditional facelifts.  Now, when millennials notice the first signs of aging, they are keen to address them early on.  

Aging is not a one size fits all process.  Everyone ages differently, and many factors impact how quickly a person begins to show signs of aging.  Certainly, genetics plays a part, as does diet and exercise, sun damage, alcohol consumption, and smoking.  Where you are in the aging process will determine the procedure(s) best suited for your situation. 

If you are a young person in your late 20s and early 30s with proper skin care habits, you may be able to address the initial signs of aging with nonsurgical solutions.  Botox® and Dysport® as well as facial fillers are a great way to treat early signs of aging.  Every expression we make cause the muscles in our face to contract, and this repetitive movement leads to fine lines and wrinkles.  Additionally, our skin loses firmness as we age because our collagen production decreases.  We can treat fine lines and wrinkles with Botox® and Dysport® to help relax the muscles and prevent them from contracting.  We can then use facial fillers, such as Restylane® and Juvéderm® to fill in the gaps and restore volume.  These procedures take around 30 minutes with no downtime, so you can return to regular activity quickly.

Another great nonsurgical option is Band Aid Laser Skin Resurfacing.  Laser skin resurfacing works by encouraging collagen production in your skin.  Collagen is the protein responsible for making skin firmer and smoother.  Using this treatment, we are able to encourage new collagen production which will reduce fine lines and wrinkles, diminish scarring and freckles, and treat sun damage.  You will be left with a smoother complexion and a more youthful appearance.  My Band Aid Laser Skin Resurfacing procedure is performed in-office with gentle numbing, making the procedure easy and comfortable.  Generally, you can expect a recovery period of about two weeks. 

Once you enter your 40s you may want to consider surgical options.  I have a line of Band Aid Facelift procedures that aim to provide patients with the ability to treat aging in incremental stages.  My Band Aid Mini Facelift and Band Aid Micro Mini Facelift procedures are unique because they produce a very natural, subtle change and are performed in-office with gentle numbing.  As a result, these procedures are less invasive than traditional facelifts, leading to less swelling and bruising, shorter recovery time, lower costs, and fewer complications.  The difference between these two procedures depends upon how much aging needs to be corrected.

My Band Aid Micro Mini Facelift is great for patients seeking to address early signs of aging subtly, or as maintenance between facelift procedures.  On the other hand, my Band Aid Mini Facelift may be a better option if you seek to correct more advanced signs of aging but are not yet ready for or wanting to do a traditional facelift.  Both procedures are great options for patients looking to address new signs of aging as they appear, leaving you with natural-looking results and a younger version of yourself. 

Of course, you are not forced to decide between laser, injectables, or surgical options.  Each of these procedures complements one another, and combining treatments can enhance and prolong results.

Understanding All Of Your Brow Lift Options

Over time, it’s only natural for loose, sagging skin to accumulate in the area directly above the eyes and forehead muscles to gradually weaken. This wrinkled skin can dramatically affect a person’s facial appearance and make them look old before their time. Thankfully, brow lift surgery can help. Today I wanted to discuss the different brow lift procedure options that I provide and how they can each help my patients achieve their unique aesthetic goals.

Band Aid Brow Lift

My signature band aid brow lift offers patients a more subtle and less invasive alternative for the procedure when compared to traditional brow lift surgery. The band aid brow lift can effectively address visible wrinkles and creases in the forehead area to help provide a more vital and less tired-looking appearance. Similar to my other “Band Aid” procedures, the band aid brow lift can be performed in our office with gentle numbing while the patient is awake. Additionally, the band aid brow lift comes with a shorter recovery time and lower surgical costs than the traditional version of the procedure.

Combined with Eyelid Surgery

One approach to brow lift surgery that I recommend for some of my patients when appropriate is combining the procedure with eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty). Combining a brow lift and eyelid surgery into one procedure can help provide comprehensive rejuvenation to the upper portion of a patient’s face (above and around the eyes). Depending on each patient’s needs and preferences, we can combine a band aid brow lift with either traditional eyelid surgery or the band aid version of the procedure.

Are You a Candidate for a Tummy Tuck? Here’s How to Know

For some, a tummy tuck or a mini tummy tuck like my Band Aid Tummy Tuck could be the ideal way to get the body contour you want.

Are you a good candidate for a tummy tuck? Follow each of these steps to find out if you should take the next step and schedule a consultation at my plastic surgery office.

Define Your Cosmetic Goals

Each plastic surgery, including a tummy tuck, is designed to address very specific cosmetic concerns. Specifically, a tummy tuck can help with:

  • A “pooch” on your lower abdomen due to abdominal muscles that separated, a common issue for women who have been pregnant
  • Sagging skin throughout your abdominal area, above and/or below your belly button
  • Excess fat in your belly

If one or more of these aesthetic concerns are on your list of priorities, a tummy tuck may be the best way to improve them.

Check Up on Your Health

While a tummy tuck is cosmetic, it’s still a surgical procedure, and candidates should be in good health to make the surgery very low-risk. While I require every patient to undergo select medical tests before their surgery, it’s a good idea to visit your general practitioner for an annual physical if you haven’t had one in some time so you have an idea of your overall health.

It’s important to think about your health habits as well. For example, if you are a smoker, be aware that you will need to stop smoking for several weeks before and after surgery to allow for healthy healing.

Determine Your Weight Management Plans

A tummy tuck is designed to contour the physique you have on the day of the surgery. Any changes to your figure, including weight gain or weight loss, will impact the results of your surgery. This is why ideal candidates for a tummy tuck should be at or near their ideal weight with plans to maintain their weight long-term. If you have recently lost weight, it’s best to wait until you have kept your weight stable for several months so you’re certain you’re able to maintain it.

Pregnancy will also affect your tummy tuck results. For women considering a tummy tuck, it’s best to wait until you’re finished having children or you’ve decided you don’t want children in the future.

Consider Your Patience for Recovery

A tummy tuck has the potential to make a powerful difference in your appearance, but with this comes a recovery period that will limit your movements and activities for some time. To be a candidate for a tummy tuck, you need to be able to take enough time off work to recover and to properly follow all post-surgical care instructions and limitations so your body can heal.

Weigh Your Surgical Options

A traditional tummy tuck isn’t the only way to get excellent body contouring results. As you consider a tummy tuck, consider whether you might be a better fit for a similar type of procedure instead.

For example, my Band Aid Tummy Tuck is a minimally invasive, in-office tummy tuck performed with gentle numbing rather than general anesthesia. For patients who want to treat a smaller area, my Band Aid Tummy Tuck can provide strong results with less recovery time.

Another potential alternative is liposuction. If your primary cosmetic concern is abdominal fat rather than sagging skin or muscle separation, liposuction or my Band Aid Liposuction may be better suited to your needs.
