Every year, hundreds of thousands of people in the US alone choose liposuction or mini liposuction surgery to shape their physiques and give them the contours they want, whether they’re treating their “double chin” area, abdomen, arms, legs, or other area. As with any surgery, though, liposuction has better potential if you prepare correctly before your surgery. Choose the Right Type of Liposuction for Your Needs

It’s vital to choose an experienced and knowledgeable board-certified plastic surgeon for your liposuction, but that isn’t the only decision that will impact your results. There are also different types of liposuction surgery for you to choose.

If you want to treat a small area, consider my Band Aid Liposuction instead. This is a minimally invasive version of liposuction surgery which I developed to use gentle numbing rather than general anesthesia. Because liposuction removes unwanted fat, there is a common misconception that it is a substitute for weight loss or an “easy way out” for people who want to lose weight. To get the best results from your liposuction, it’s important to be at or very near to your ideal weight before your surgery. Remember that if your weight fluctuates after your surgery, it can also affect your long-term results, so it’s vital that you have mastered weight management before surgery so you can keep your weight stable and preserve your results for as long as possible.

For liposuction, as with any surgery, the better your health is before the procedure, the better your recovery is likely to be. Healing from surgery is a big job, so you want your body to be in top shape beforehand so healing can be its only focus.

To make that happen, take time to build and maintain healthy habits before your surgery. That includes eating a healthy diet, avoiding tobacco and nicotine as well as excessive alcohol, drinking plenty of water, and managing stress. Before your surgery with me, I will also require lab testing to check your health and ensure that you are healthy enough for the procedure.

Follow Your Pre-Surgical Instructions

For every patient that I treat, I begin with a pre-surgical consultation to discuss the surgery you may want, what the surgery involves, your expectations, and so on. As part of that consultation, I will give you detailed pre-surgical instructions for preparing for your procedure.

Be sure to follow all of these instructions carefully, because they are all designed to help you have a surgery that is as safe and effective as possible. These instructions will include information about what medications to avoid and when antibiotic soap to use for your treatment area, how to prepare for your postoperative care, and more.

Liposuction Safety: A Guide for Patients

The decision to have plastic surgery isn’t one that people make on a whim. Most patients have thought about their surgery for months or even years, weighing the pros and cons before they decide to make that commitment and move forward. Of the “cons” patients consider, the most prominent one is usually the risks of having surgery.

As a double board-certified plastic surgeon, it is my aim to educate my patients about everything they need to know about their surgery, including the risks and limitations. While this will vary from patient to patient, I’m dedicating this blog to answering your questions and concerns about liposuction safety.

Is Liposuction Safe?

Truthfully, there are always risks that come with any type of surgery, whether it is cosmetic or medically necessary. However, serious complications are rare with liposuction surgery, so the safety rate is high for this procedure.

Before your surgery, you’ll have a one-on-one consultation with your plastic surgeon. During this consultation, you’ll discuss the results and the surgical and recovery experience you can expect, as well as the risks. I also require certain medical testing and documentation for every patient before their surgery so we can identify any added risk factors in advance.

Ways to Make Your Liposuction Surgery Safer

As rare as serious complications are, it’s important to take steps to make your liposuction surgery as safe as possible. Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to protect your health before surgery.

  1. Choose a Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon

It’s important to realize that not every provider that offers cosmetic surgery is actually board-certified in plastic surgery. Some providers may be board-certified in other specialties, such as cosmetic surgery, which is not an AMA-recognized board. Surgeons board-certified in other areas of medicine don’t have the in-depth training and tested knowledge of a board-certified plastic surgeon. I am proud to provide my patient with the added comfort of knowing that I am double board-certified – certified in plastic surgery by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and in general surgery by the American College of Surgeons.

  1. Consider a Minimally Invasive Option

While every liposuction procedure is tailored to the patient, there are some types of liposuction that are particularly different from the norm – mini liposuction surgeries. A mini liposuction surgery can vary, but these procedures typically use minimally invasive methods and smaller incisions to treat smaller, more localized pockets of unwanted fat.

In my case, I offer a unique variation: my signature Band Aid Liposuction. Not only is this surgery minimally invasive but it uses gentle numbing rather than general anesthesia. This goes a long way toward minimizing the surgical risks while also making the procedure more cost-effective and reducing the recovery time.

  1. Select a Surgeon with Plenty of Liposuction Experience

Many plastic surgeons have certain specialties that become their primary focus. For example, some surgeons almost exclusively perform breast augmentations. Other surgeons have more variety in their cases.

It’s important that for liposuction, you choose a plastic surgeon who performs liposuction on a regular basis. They don’t need to specialize exclusively in liposuction, but if they rarely perform this procedure, their skills won’t be as sharp as someone who does perform it often. For example, they may not have the expertise to ensure that your skin is firm after your surgery.

How Liposuction Has Changed Over the Years

In 2020, liposuction was the #1 most popular plastic surgery in the US according to The Aesthetic Society. The procedure is an exceptional way to contour precise areas of your physique and fine-tune the work you’ve already done with exercising and eating healthy. Today, it’s often performed as a minimally invasive surgery, so you get the contouring you want with minimal recovery time.

Like any medical procedure, though, liposuction surgery has come a long way from its beginnings. To give you a better understanding of this surgery and how advanced it has become, let’s take a journey back through the history and evolution of liposuction.

 

The Early Days

The idea of surgical fat removal was first introduced in the 1920s by a French surgeon named Charles Dujarier. The procedure was unreliable, though, so it didn’t begin growing in popularity until the 1970s when Drs. Arpad and Giorgio Fischer, working in Italy at the time, developed more modern and reliable techniques for the procedure.

Using Fluid in Liposuction

In 1982, a French surgeon named Dr. Yves-Gerard Illouz introduced what he called the “Illouz Method” for liposuction. This was the first version of the surgery that involved injecting fluid into the treatment area to make it easier to break up and remove the fat cells. This was one more step toward the manageable version of liposuction surgery that we have today.

Tumescent Liposuction

Most liposuction procedures today use a method called tumescent liposuction, which was developed and introduced by a California surgeon named Dr. Jeffrey Klein. The procedure involves injecting fluid into the treatment area as in the Illouz Method, but it uses a more advanced fluid called tumescent fluid.

Tumescent fluid is a mixture of lidocaine, saline, and epinephrine. While it plumps and firms the fat to make it easier to remove, this fluid also improves your post-surgery comfort in addition to constricting your blood vessels in the area to reduce bleeding. Overall, tumescent fluid makes liposuction easier to perform with consistently strong results and it makes your recovery time easier.

Band Aid Liposuction
