In 2010, Americans spent $10.7 billion on cosmetic enhancement procedures, according to the latest study from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS). As nonsurgical and minimally invasive procedures become increasingly popular, Atlanta plastic surgeon John LeRoy, MD is offering a more accessible and highly-effective option for cosmetic enhancement. He says the Band Aid procedures are designed as an alternative to traditional procedures, such as the facelift or liposuction, for patients in search of subtle aesthetic enhancement instead of a dramatic transformation.
With more than 9.3 million cosmetic procedures performed in 2010, 83% of the cosmetic procedures performed were nonsurgical in nature, highlighting a continuing trend toward less-invasive procedures. At his Atlanta plastic surgery practice, Dr. John LeRoy says he first noticed an interest towards mini procedures increase in 1997. In turn, he developed the Band Aid Facelift, a less-invasive approach to the traditional facelift.
The Band Aid Facelift was the first minimally invasive procedure Dr. John LeRoy developed at his plastic surgery practice in Atlanta. He has since refined Band Aid versions of blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery), brow lift, liposuction (body sculpting), and tummy tuck (abdominoplasty). Designed to create a subtle enhancement, Dr. LeRoy says he chose the name Band Aid because they do not require the heavy amount of surgical dressings or recovery time associated with more traditional cosmetic surgeries. However, Dr. LeRoy adds that some patients are better candidates for Band Aid procedures than others. “Band Aid surgeries are designed to target very specific cosmetic concerns in isolated areas for patients who are not yet in need of the traditional version. The best way to determine if a patient is a candidate for a Band Aid procedure or in need of traditional plastic surgery is to thoroughly discuss and examine his or her concerns during a consultation.”
As cosmetic enhancement becomes more prevalent in the U. S., Dr. LeRoy says less-invasive, more accessible versions of traditional plastic surgery, such as his Band Aid procedures, will continue to gain further support for the aesthetic healthcare industry. “Patients have begun seeking plastic surgery earlier in life than they once did. Instead of waiting until they need rejuvenation, they are starting to take care of concerns as soon as they begin to develop. The most important thing a patient should understand is that even though Band Aid procedures are convenient and effective, there are circumstances in which traditional plastic surgery is a more appropriate choice.”

How do I choose between silicone and saline breast implants?
The type of breast implant you select for breast augmentation truly is a matter of personal preference. Surgically speaking, both saline breast implants and silicone breast implants are safe. It’s important to speak with your prospective plastic surgeon before breast enhancement surgery not only about the type of breast implant, but also about the shape and size as those factors will also heavily influence your overall breast surgery results. Many plastic surgeons will allow you to “try on” the different types and sizes of implants during consultation to get an idea of consistency, shape, and weight.
Do breast implants change how often I should receive mammograms?
Breast enhancement patients should receive a mammogram before their surgery to serve as a benchmark to compare post-surgery mammograms. According to current U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) guidelines, women over the age of 50 should receive mammograms as directed by their physician (typically every two years) (The National Cancer Institute recommends: Women 40 years and older should get a mammogram every 1 to 2 years). If you are a patient with a family history of breast cancer it’s even more important to receive regular mammograms, as directed by your physician for preventative measures.
Plastic surgery can provide results from very dramatic to very subtle depending on a patient’s desires, but I’ve noticed many patients do not really want (or need) dramatic plastic surgery results. Back in 1997, I developed the original Band Aid Facelift (a “mini” version of the traditional facelift) with these particular patients in mind. Since then, I’ve refined other traditional cosmetic procedures to offer Band Aid Blepharoplasty, Band Aid Brow Lift, Band Aid Tummy Tuck, and Band Aid Liposuction. I chose the name “Band Aid” because the nature of my technique doesn’t require surgical dressings like the traditional procedures. In fact, Band Aid procedures are performed in office under local anesthesia and have a significantly shorter recovery time than the traditional procedures. Although Band Aid procedures are appealing, there is an appropriate and inappropriate application for them.
First, let’s discuss the appropriate times for Band Aid procedures. My Band Aid procedures were designed as minimally invasive versions of traditional plastic surgery procedures for patients who desire plastic surgery, but are not in need of a full procedure. For instance, some patients are troubled by their early signs of aging, although these signs of aging are not prominent enough to need a traditional facelift. These patients are perfect candidates for the Band Aid Facelift. The “mini” procedure is minimally invasive, making only local anesthesia necessary.
Everyone ages differently, and a full facelift is not always necessary. Some people age first around their brow, while others initially show aging around their eyes or mouth. Patients who are just beginning to notice signs of aging on their brow (i.e.- fine lines, sagging skin/brows, wrinkles) may benefit from Band Aid Brow Lift. Similarly, patients who notice early signs of aging around their eyes (i.e.- fat pockets, drooping or hooded eyelids) can benefit from Band Aid Blepharoplasty, minimally invasive eyelid surgery.
