We are all tempted by products of convenience. Like a combination shampoo and conditioner, anything that saves us time and money innately rises to the top of our wish lists. According to a new study published in Health Day however, combination plastic and non-cosmetic surgeries should not be one of them.
According to the study, those women who opted to receive a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty), surgical excision of loose abdominal skin and the reattachment of muscles stretched by dramatic weight loss or pregnancy, at the same time that they underwent a hysterectomy developed surgical complications 32% of the time. While this is not the majority of patients, Dr. Sherrell Aston from the prestigious Manhattan Eye, Ear, and Throat Hospital states, “Any procedure that carries a 32 percent complication rate should be re-evaluated.”
As an Atlanta cosmetic and plastic surgeon with twenty years of plastic surgery experience, Dr. John LeRoy emphasizes the need for prospective patients to use due caution when contemplating a combination surgical procedure. There are several combinations of cosmetic surgery procedures including mommy makeover surgery and post bariatric plastic surgery with a time-tested record of providing successful plastic surgery results without exposing patients to dramatically increased surgical risks. Mommy makeover surgery typically combines tummy tuck (abdominoplasty), breast surgery (breast augmentation, breast lift, or breast reduction), and body sculpting (liposuction) to address the physical effects of pregnancy and childbirth.
If you do decide to undergo plastic surgery at the same time as a non-cosmetic procedure, it’s important to ensure that the surgeons performing each aspect of the operation are appropriately qualified to do so (i.e., most gynecologists performing hysterectomies are not board certified plastic surgeons with experience performing tummy tucks). A good hallmark to look for with a prospective plastic surgeon is board certification from the American Board of Plastic Surgery and American College of Surgeons.
